There are 3 HUGE areas to explore, so no more instances. You can now sleep like in Oblivion to avoid going out at night (if you dont have proper equipment) and there are a lot of improvements in terms of your reputation.
Nobody, except Zombies and mutants, attacks you on sight, so you can talk to anyone. There are numerous open-ended quests, where you can choose different sides, that will affect the outcome.
There are achievements in the game, that you get after doing certain deeds, that will have direct effect on how different people interact with you. There are 3 safe houses in every big area, and there is a Guide in every area that will take you back and forth for a small fee.
Shooting mechanics are same old stalker. It uses semi-realistic shooting, with trajectory of the bullet affected by your stance, bullet type, distance and condition of your weapon. So you really need to learn to aim. All weapons are upgradeable to improve different qualities to your desire. Armor is upgradeable as well but I havent noticed any new types of armor.
Now, the problems... well, they're same old stalker problems. The performance of the game leaves much to be desired. I have a decent rig, but even with latest patch, the game goes between 15-30 fps sporadically, independent of the settings. (c2d e6700, 4gigs ram, 8800GT). No matter which settings you choose, the performance doesn't improve at all.
The game still doesn't have that same atmosphere as the first game, but it certainly has more of it than Clear Sky. You see a lot more enemies all the time now, heck you can walk out of a safehouse, and see a controller walking by. Happened to me twice. Of course, if he doesn't see you, you pull out a n SVD2 and headshot that asshole. Bloodsuckers roam the streets in numerous quantities, but thankfully, if you spot them from far away, you can snipe them off too. Only problem is, they cloak when they see you so make sure to leave ample distance.
Im playing imported russian version, and last time I checked, there are a plenty non-official English mods, that translate most of the writing. You'll miss out on most of the story, cause its told via in-game cutscenes.
