Star Trek Online Launch Date Announced

Cryptic Studios' massively multiplayer take on Star Trek will launch February 2 in North America and February 5 in Europe, the company officially confirmed today.

The second PC MMO to emerge from Cryptic in less than a year, the first being September's Champions Online, Star Trek Online is currently in beta testing and is billed by the company as "the first MMO to offer both space and ground game play."

This is not the first MMO to offer space and ground gameplay. Perhaps out of box this is unique. SWG had space gameplay and ground game play. Earth and Beyond had a type of ground gameplay (not combat, but it was gameplay nonetheless).

My biggest complaint with this game is that none of the new ship designs follow any of the architectural and aesthetic guidelines that have governed how the show's creative team and Starfleet construct their vessels.

It looks to me like Cryptic went out of their way to create as many new classes as possible, but this doesn't fit the lore at all. Starfleet worked on the Sovereign class ships (Enterprise NCC-1701-E and the USS Sovereign) for over a decade before finally starting construction of the pathfinder and it was the first new class they had introduced in years.

Didn't the build they showed to the press a couple of weeks ago crash when people went to the inventory screen because "the inventory system hadn't been implemented yet?"

I'm hoping for the best, but my optimism is tempered.

I hope it won't have the same "zone" instance/population limits that Champions has. I don't know if that's a limitation of the engine, a game play consideration or because of the server farm configuration but I do know it sucks balls. It completely destroys the feeling of a server "community ", at least for me.

I was really looking forward to this game, and maybe they will surprise me, but Cryptic's recent MMOs have been rather shallow to say the least, and this seems really rushed. I wasn't expecting this game to be ready until end of 2010 at the absolute earliest. How can they just go into Beta and be ready to launch two and a half months from now? Hell, has beta even started yet?

When will publishers learn an MMOs launch makes or breaks it's success and future. You rush a product out the door and it will fail.

This seems highly rushed. Such a shame, I was looking forward to a good space MMO. Guess I'll just have to wait for The Old Republic.
