Avatar: The Game Trailer Ignites the War

A new trailer for James Cameron's Avatar: The Game arrived today. It showcases the alien world of Pandora and its colorful, yet aggressive denizens, the Na'vi. Players face them as RDA Corporation Soldiers and giant armored mechs in fights ranging through the jungles. Alien panther-like animals and large red rhinos are thrown into the mix, for good measure.

Players will be able to fight alongside RDA Corp, or side with the indigenous aliens when Avatar arrives on December 1 for the PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS, PSP and Wii. You can check out our previous coverage of Avatar: The Game

Visuals don't look bad considering whatever's running it will have to render at twice the framerate as other games (since it will be 3D, requires two views at once, hence two renders at once). If that's the performance and quality the 360/PS3 will be getting, I'm actually kind of impressed, aside from the choppiness. I was fearing every 3D game on current consoles would have to have graphics take a back stage to get good performance, like Invincible Tiger demonstrated.

Cameron pretty much handed this studio (I think it's Ubisoft) millions of dollars worth of designs and 3D models to use in their game. They had all the art direction they were ever going to need, all they had to do was animate it and make it fun -- if they drop the ball on this one it will be one of the most epic failures in gaming history.

There's only about a month to go before the game is released and this trailer looks like it was captured running at 10 frames per second. That's not a good sign :(

I saw a demo of this at PAX. It looked pretty, but seemed like a fairly bland game. The most impressive part of the whole presentation was the 103" plasma TV mounted on the wall that they displayed it on (in 3D, we needed glasses to watch it). Not interested whatsoever in this, but damn I cannot wait for the movie. I saw a 20 min preview of Avatar at my local IMAX, and all I can say is go see this at IMAX if you are able!

It's pretty, but I still am not sure what kind of game it's supposed to be.

FPS? 3PS? RTS?

It could be chess with really fancy capture animations, I suppose.

Seeing the actual interface instead of a cinematic montage would be helpful.

Did I imagine it or waaaay back when they announced this movie didn't they announce some MMORPG as well? I seem to recall the MMORPG was going to launch well before the movie and serve as a prequel of sorts.

I could be imagining it but if I'm not, I wonder how far that idea came along before they abandoned it.
