The Force Unleashed PC System Requirements Force a Big Install
by Nick Breckon, Oct 23, 2009 1:00pm PDTLucasArts has released the official system requirements for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition: The Video Game, and while most of the bullet-points are pretty reasonable, the 24GB install is certainly a little intimidating.
The Sith Edition--set to include the previous Tatooine DLC pack and a new, exclusive Hoth level--hits this holiday on PC, Mac, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
The PC requirements follow:
Minimum System Requirements
- Operating System: Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP2. Windows 7
- CPU Processor: 2.4 GHz Dual Core Processor (Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon X2)
- Memory: 2 GB RAM
- Hard Disk Space: 23.8 GB + 1 GB Swap File
- Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card
- Video Card: 3D Hardware Accelerator Card Required -- 100% DirectX 9.0c compatible 256 MB Video Memory with Shader 3.0 support
- Video Card (ATI): Radeon HD 2900
- Video Card (Nvidia): Geforce 8800
- Media Required: 8X DVD-ROM drive
- Windows XP/Vista compatible mouse and keyboard or Microsoft Xbox 360 Wired Controller
This product does not support Windows 95/98/ME/2000/NT.

This game fits on a single DVD and requires 24GB, some % of which is a footprint. And the system requirements are high.
I think the main reason we even get PC ports anymore is because the developers want to put the game out on a platform where they have no boundaries. And as an enthusiast, I like this
They have to make the game run on the 360/PS3. They can't say "go buy a faster 360", there isn't one. But they can put out a game on the PC with multiple stops of quality, one of which is "as much as you can throw at it"
This is why I see PC gaming going the way of vinyl records - it never goes away, and offers a superior experience, but is minuscule in purchase numbers and the rigs needed to experience it properly are the domain of the enthusiasts and the insane.
