Dead Space Extraction Sales Slow, Analyst Points to Poor Marketing
by Nick Breckon, Oct 21, 2009 4:20pm PDTSales of Visceral Games' Dead Space Extraction--the Wii rail shooter adaptation of the original Dead Space--have been unimpressive following its September 29 release, leading one analyst to blame a lackluster EA marketing campaign.
The game sold only 9,000 copies in the US between September 29 and October 3, according to NPD sales data.
"Electronic Arts didn't market Dead Space Extraction as much as it does with other titles," said EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich to Edge.
"The success or failure of a Wii title usually correlates directly to marketing spend," he added. "If Electronic Arts spent little on marketing, I am sure the sell through was no surprise to them. So I do not believe sell through was a disappointment to EA."

All I hope is they don't waste these assets. I loved the dead space universe.

There's actually a good market for DS in its original form on the Wii, as RE4: Wii sold quite well on that system. But I think the reason they chose the rail-shooter route, besides being on a budget, is that RE:UC -- a cheap cash-in -- sold over a million units. I can't help but think that the only reason that rail-shooter sold well, was because RE4:Wii was such a success and may of use wanted more RE Wii. DS:E on the other hand doesn't have this luxury, so I really can't see it doing as well.
I bought DS:Extraction -- while grinding my teeth -- because I enjoyed DS on the PC so much. The only reason I bought that game in the first place was because of my experience with RE4:Wii, which was a blast -- unlike the abomination PC version, which I also own.
DS:E is actually a good game when it gets going, but as it's only a rail-shooter, it's not what I wanted in a DS game. It really changes the experience I enjoyed so much with the first game. If anything, I started a new game on my PC again after completing it.
Anyways, if you have a WIi, seriously consider picking it up, if not just to support future DS games. It really does manage to hold true to the DS universe. For a rail-shooter, it's by far the best I've played, but this is coming from someone that normally avoids these games outside of an arcade. Also, if you've never played RE4, the Wii version is by far the best, and it's a game that's quite similar to DS, which of course borrowed heavily from that game.
