Death Rally Released for Free

Remedy Entertainment has released for free the full version of its 1996 top-down combat racing game Death Rally, available in a 42MB download over on FileShack.

The release is ported to run on modern PCs but lacks multiplayer, as Remedy explains "It was built for the modem and IPX network era, and would have needed a full rewrite."

Death Rally was a fine specimen of a top-down racer, with the bonus of upgrading and arming your vehicle to destroy the opposition. Besides, it's not often you get to race against Duke Nukem himself and even shoot up his ride--and live to tell the tale.

Just installed it on my netbook as I'm away on business. Of course it runs great and this is just what I need after a long day of work in a strange city and back in a strange hotel room :)

I have turned this into a Mac app and sent it to Remedy. Hopefully they'll post it for Mac users. Love this game, and so glad they released the Windows version. Even more glad for the Porting Team (www.portingteam.com).

It would be nice if they released the source code along with it. I actually downloaded the demo for this about 2 months ago and once i got it running, i was surprised how well it still played. But for top down racing, New Star GP still rules the road.

This game was one of my favorites when I was a kid. The music was amazing and it was the first time I understood what a "loan shark" was. Pretty wicked stuff.
