This engine basically allows you to throw as much texture assets as you want to any set of geometry. The next id engine will, hopefully, based on Carmack's comments, also allow you to throw as much geometry as you wish to model. That's basically it. You are no longer constrained by anything but time, for hardware advances will more or less allow you to treat your Radiant like a 3dsmax, building as much shit as you want, as detailed as you want, without really having to worry about hitting a programatical limit. Sure, you can do something too intricate to run at 30fps in current hardware, but it's not going to crash or exit on account of a basic limit.
