PC Gaming Alliance Gains Several New Members, Including Gas Powered Games

Supreme Commander and Demigod developer Gas Powered Games is among the latest to join the PC Gaming Alliance, a distinction that also applies to BFG Technologies, Bigfoot Networks, Flextronics, GameTap, Howie's Game Shack and InstantAction.

The non-profit consortium, which strives to "drive worldwide growth of PC gaming," announced the new members today and highlighted the recent addition of GameStop.

"I've spent most of my career fully immersed in the world of PC gaming. It's where many of the world's biggest gaming franchises were born and where much of the industry's innovation continues to this day," said Gas Powered Games CEO Chris Taylor. "Gas Powered Games hopes to make contributions that keep PC gaming at the forefront of the industry, help it to overcome its challenges, and continue to fulfill its amazing potential."

Chris Taylor is a great guy if you ever meet him in person. Dungeon Siege was awesome. However since then they've made a few "good" games, but nothing amazingly new.

PC gaming started in some nerd's garage who had an idea and worked it to fruition using the technology of the time, Atari 800s, Amigas, Apple IIe's. Now, PC gaming is all about BIG budget productions; the nerds who originally made it happen are all but extinct. There needs to be a revival which is less focused on big budget graphics and more on innovative and fun gameplay - The guy who made Braid and this guy make me believe it can still happen:

Not to sound like a skeptic, but out of curiosity, how are they going to make the PC a better platform? No doubt, it's in need of help. But unless they can end piracy, remove the seemingly endless "looking for solutions to error message" easter egg hunts, a speed up increasingly long installs, I don't see PC gaming going very far..

The GameStop announcement is particularly surprising given how small their PC games section is. Even if they are joining the alliance, what are they planning on doing to sell more PC games?

At this moment, the PC games section at my local gamestop is about 2 1/2 shelving units, and is hidden in the back corner behind other things such as the bin of used games. It doesn't feel like they're advertising to PC gamers. I'm wondering how this will affect things, if at all in the coming months.

The PGA is a total joke.

With names like Microsoft lately dropping PC versions, GameStop who's employees will smirk at you when you explain that you want said title on PC not a console. Epic games, we all know how Bleszinski feels about the platform and Capcom whom bring the laziest PC ports around.

Where are the real hardware makers and why aren't they doing something to help keep pc alive? I mean like Intel, AMD and Nvidia... these guys need to get on board and stop dragging their feet releasing technology that isn't being used yet on PCs... like DX10 - where the heck is the support for it? Sure they push out DX10 cards - but where are ALL THE GAMES?

Of course some of these companies are going to be involved. They want to continue selling hardware to the PC gamer market. If PC gaming keeps going the way it is though, how will companies like BFG or Bigfoot stay in business?

If all PC gamers get are ports and multiplatform, why upgrade? DX9 hardware from 2-3 years ago still keeps up with most of the latest and greatest games (ports).

This alliance will fold eventually. Publishers don't give a fuck about the PC anymore.

How can you have a PCGA with members who have their interests split between consoles and PCs. If the PCGA had any real power I suspect it would exist soley to keep PC on life support while championing consoles.
