MAG Dev Diary: 'We're Doin' It at 30 Frames'
by Nick Breckon, Jun 23, 2009 3:14pm PDTThe next developer diary for MAG, Zipper's Massive Action Game that supports up to 256 players online, provides a pretty general overview of the experience.
While the PlayStation 3-exclusive title is not quite the first FPS to feature unscripted helicopter and building explosions, as the developers claim, it will certainly be the first to do it with 256 players. And that's certainly a lot of players.
MAG will arrive on the PS3 sometime this fall.

It kind of makes you wonder why so many people still game on the PC anymore. Aside from the mouse and keyboard, do people really like putting themselves through the headache of troubleshooting bugs? Hell, a couple times a solution ended up working, but introduced new bugs. On top of that, PC games have increasingly large installs. Games keep on getting bigger, but you can still start playing as soon as you put the disk in on consoles.
Im terrible with a controller, but the day they find a way to let you use a mouse and keyboard on a console, is the day that I leave behind "Error : Dx,_4550_Abxx*.dll could not be found" for epic 256 player gameplay.

Sigh. Console developers crack me up. That's the one nice thing about PC gaming - no worrying about 30 bleeping frames per second, at least. (Of course there's always something to worry about on any platform but I swear I hear this remark all the time with console gaming/design. You'd think for all the supposed uber-powered-ness of modern consoles, that this would be the last thing devs are worrying about.)

Of course they won't because then the large majority of controller-users would never stop bitching and moaning.

I might like the idea but after plyaing some big maps with just 80 people on bf2142 mods aside from network errors and packet loss problems it's hard to coordinate any kind of an attack it will be interesting o see how they get around the packet loss and hit detection problems .

Too bad fucking around isn't quantifiable or else it'd be in the Guinness book of records for the most fucking around and not playing seriously or any online games.

Anyone who played Planetside with Shackers way back when, probably is too. Some of my best and most memorable gaming moments are playing Planetside with shackers.
My wishlist for features in MAG:
- A deep class system
- Netcode that doesn't favor people with slow connections
- Variety of interesting weapons... all I've seen in the promo videos is boring assault rifles over and over.
