Borderlands Teased with First Footage of New Art Style

by Nick Breckon, May 31, 2009 11:03pm PDT

Last year's E3 brought a bunch of footage from Gearbox's Halo/Diablo, FPS/RPG hybrid Borderlands. Since then, the game's art style has been changed from bland realism to a sketched-in look reminiscent of concept art.

The trailer below gives us our first look at the new shading in motion. We'll have more coverage of Borderlands as E3 gets underway later this week.

  • I don't want to be a negative nancy, but the cell-shaded approach has never appeared tasteful to my eyes in any game but Jet Set Moto or whatever. Every other game it just... hurts, and I know that I won't be able to put quite as many hours into a gritty, barren wasteland when it looks like a cartoon.

Or maybe i'll get used to it, but bah, I wish it had stayed realistic. There is something about the concept of this game that demands cruelty so that you can rely on your friends to keep you going, and I was hoping some of that would come from the visuals.
