The Matrix Online Going Offline

After over four years of operation, Sony has announced that its MMO The Matrix Online will be shutting down permanently in roughly two months.

"On July 31, 2009, we will be jacking out for the last time," wrote Matrix Online producer Daniel "Walrus" Myers on the game's forum. "It's a bittersweet moment for everyone involved with the game; as a player or as a developer."

Developed by Monolith, the Matrix Online launched in March of 2005. The game was soon purchased by Sony Online, and by that August its modest player base was folded from nine servers into three.

Myers noted that the game, often distinguished by the development team's story writers and in-game actors, will see a fitting end.

"The team will also be whipping up an end-of-the-world event," he said. "It won't be quite the same as having over 100 developers in the game as Agents like when we ended beta, but we have 4 years of tricks up our sleeve. It'll be a chance to revisit all the things that make MxO the memorable experience it is. And how could we pull the plug without crushing everyone's RSI [stat points] just one more time?"

  • The game had potential. I have always praised it during its beta. I used to be heavily involved in the community and the live events. The end of beta event was one of my most memorable gaming experiences. That said. Once the game got released, everything started going downhill. Warner Brothers and Monolith bailed instantly. The Wachowski's support was pretty much non existent. I have lost my respect and admiration for them cause of it. Anyway, the game lacked content. Still does as far as i know. The atmosphere was there but most of the music was pretty disappointing.
I don't understand why they couldn't use more music from the movie. The voice actors and their likeness to the characters started being removed. The live events and their writing got sloppier. I mean, giant flies and bug sprays? Fuck off! The original live events were the key element of this game. Without them, the game was nothing but a bore. Finally, the cinematic cut scenes were reduced to pencil drivel. The final nail in the coffin. After that, i completely lost all interest in it. I very much enjoyed the community and the camaraderie of my guild, Children of Zion. I was a bit sad when i left because i have yet to find another Guild that is as a good natured and dedicated as they are. Anyway, i am surprised that it managed to survive this long. Good riddance.
