Plants vs. Zombies Is PopCap's Fastest-selling Game
by Nick Breckon, May 20, 2009 12:30pm PDTPopCap's action-packed tower defense title Plants vs. Zombies has taken the lead as the company's fastest-selling title.
"At this very early point in its history, it's the best-selling game PopCap's ever had," said Popcap's Garth Chouteau to Gamasutra.
Plants vs. Zombies combines the simple, addictive nature of PopCap titles with the strategy of tower defense and the reliable attraction of zombies, making for a broadly appealing title.
"At this juncture, we don't worry much about 'casual vs. hardcore'--we try to make games that will appeal to both audiences more or less equally," said Chouteau. "In this short attention span century of ours, this can be tricky since people tend to judge things quickly."
Added Chouteau: "Thankfully, Plants vs. Zombies is engaging enough that people end up spending a ton of time in the game before they really realize that an afternoon has just evaporated."

Hard not to like.
A little easy in the beginning (wish they had a difficulty adjustment) but the last stage on the roof can get pretty hard.
Now if only they'd add a Vs mode... I'd love to be able to play the Zombies against friends! :-)

Although for the life of me I can't figure out why PopCap is selling the game on their one website for $19.99 (who bought it there anyways?), the steam pricing at $9.99 makes this a must purchase with great value.
With the assortment of bonus deals and other great pricing on steam, I think if it had of been $15 - I would have questioned my purchase, and $20 I would have been disappointed.
I know a lot of people that hang out here, including a good number of devs, believe price really doesn't matter if you make a great game but I think with so many distribution channels, sales, and deals - proper initial pricing is more important than ever. So consider this, I bought Defence Grid (a game I probably would have never bought) for 5 bucks the same day I purchased PvZ, and I refuse to buy Lode Runner on Xbox Live at $15. I am pretty sure I not the only one.

"What genre should we pick for our next game?"
"Well, tower defense is pretty popular..."
"Good idea. Brainstorm!"
"Tower... Tower... T-ower... Power... Cower... Fl-Flower! FLOWER DEFENSE!"
"Sold, put Zombies in it and ship it"
I love it.
