Shadowbane Staves Off Shutdown

Following Ubisoft's recent announcement that Wolfpack's free-to-play PC MMO Shadowbane would be shutting down on May 1, the company has provided the title with another two months of life, with indications that it could live on through a new publisher.

"The support and enthusiasm the community has shown for Shadowbane has led to an extension of the closure date to July 1, 2009," reads the game's official site. "This should allow the community enough time to play out its final days appropriately."

Meanwhile, Massively noticed that free-to-play MMO publisher Aeria Games has disclosed that it's in discussions with Ubisoft regarding Shadowbane, and is asking its Twitter followers for thoughts on Shadowbane. Thanks to kn1fe for the tip.

  • Its got such a cool framework for an mmo. If it could only be reborn with modern graphic quality and working siege weapons. The whole idea that any group of opportunistic, cunning and ruthless players in a persistent world can achieve the ability to build huge castles and tax merchants etc is so cool. Feudal wars over valuable land and inevitable collections of players and assets formed to launch a full scale war against another city is very cool. I guess I loved the fact that the players created the lore and stories in real time. The most powerful clans absorbed lesser clans until constant border skirmishes would incite the inevitable attempt to raze your oppositions assets by any means possible, including staging an attack in off hours to exploit low population count and the infiltration of double agents, nothing was too despicable. It was all out, anything goes, life is not fair, stfu carebear PVP but when the battles happened the servers would crash and it was so frustrating. That is what ultimately burned me out was the fact that important parts of the game didnt work as intended. When I went back for a sentimental visit it just looks so bland and dated and empty but for a while that game was really cool.
