Diablo, Mythos Vets Announce Action-MMO 'Torchlight'
by Nick Breckon, Apr 22, 2009 7:16pm PDTNewly founded developer Runic Games, one of several companies formed from the ashes of Hellgate and Mythos developer Flagship, today announced its first project: an action-MMO titled Torchlight.
Torchlight is billed as a simple, action-oriented online PC game in the style of Diablo. The basic setup: "Adventurers set out from the town of Torchlight into the nearby mountains in search of the magic ore that imbues their equipment with power, yet imperils their very existence."
The title is set to be published worldwide exclusively by Chinese online gaming company Perfect World.
Runic Games was founded by brothers Max and Erich Schaefer, two co-founders of Diablo developer Blizzard North.
Since the dissolution of Flagship, all 14 developers that worked on the company's action-RPG Mythos have joined Runic. The studio has also been bolstered by the addition of Diablo and Diablo II composer Matt Uelmen.

re: MMO
- the game in the screenshots isn't one. It's a single-player game to be released this year. It is an action-RPG. The MMO as referred to in the article will be released later (undisclosed as yet).
re: non-original idea
- this comes from the team that created the original Diablo, along with the team that worked on Mythos, an action-RPG-MMO. This is NOT the same team that worked on HG:L. Most importantly, the president of Runic Games is a fellow named Travis Baldree, who had a huge role developing the WildTangent game, Fate. So they're not copying D3 in the least; if anything, they're doing what they do best and building on a very similar style to their previous games, namely Fate and Mythos.
re: boooo Flagship!
- Not the same dudes. This team is talented and dedicated. I was in all phases of the CBT for Mythos and they listen to their community and they work hard to polish their games. Go RUNIC!!
Just FYI.

A quick welcome for all the new visitors being brought in by the press announcement and screenshots. A lot of you have questions, and although we are preparing a wiki for all Runic Games information to be compiled into, it is not quite finished and I wanted to answer a couple questions that most people are asking right now:
These details are subject to change as the games mentioned are still being developed.
When is Torchlight coming out?
The press release is a little misleading. There is actually a single player game (the game shown in the screenshots) being developed alongside the MMO. The single player game will be released this year and the MMO in coming years. They are separate games but in the same world.
How much will it cost?
We have been told that they want to sell the single player game for around 20-30 dollars (US) and mainly have it be available via online distribution. No details on the MMO have been released yet, but when the team was working on Mythos they had a free game with an online store planned for fun items that would give anyone an unfair advantage.
Who are Runic Games?
Runic Games is a team composed of the people who formerly worked on Flagship Studios’ unreleased Mythos. The team was located in Seattle while the San Francisco team worked on Hellgate: London.
If you want to know anything else, or ask questions, feel free to register on our forums and ask all you want. Several Runic Games developers have accounts (their names are in Orange) and they sometimes reply to our comments or questions. Feel free to post your own questions and comments, and welcome to the community!

so if I was these diablo vets, and I just came off a horrible failure of a company and games, I would start small too. They bit off more than they could chew last time. It is smart to start modest this time.
They can innovate and get crazy graphics and do all that great risky stuff next game.

Diablo was/is amazing. Warcraft was fantastic. How many times do they have to make milestone games/genres before they have earned the respect of these people?
As much as their games are fun, they are not in any way original. WarCraft is based on Warhammer classic, StarCraft on Warhammer 40k, Diablo was bought and then there's nothing major left from Blizzard.

(For all the people saying diablo looks cartoonish)
Nah kidding, I understand what you mean when you say it, but diablo looks very realistic compared to this which I think is a good thing.
But I indeed find it odd how they are looking similar, Diablo 3 and this game. Maybe it's the lightning and the surroundings?

I do not want to play DiablMMO. Not if you call it Hellgate and not if you call it Torchlight. I want a nice action rpg with multiplayer options. I will not pay a monthly fee for it. As a matter of fact, I'll probably never play multiplayer at all unless somebody I know wants to run around killing monsters for a while. Now, in case I'm not being perfectly clear, one more time. Diablo good. Hellgate bad.
