Stormrise PC to Require DirectX 10, Vista
by Nick Breckon, Mar 04, 2009 12:22pm PSTCreative Assembly's RTS Stormrise will be one of the first PC games to require both a DirectX 10-capable video card and Windows Vista, according to an interview on PC Games Hardware.
"Stormrise has been designed for DirectX 10 and Vista only right from the start," said Stormrise lead designer Artem Kulakov, who later clarified: "Vista only. DX10 only. No fallback option. We have never suggested this or hinted at it, so it shouldn't be a surprise."
"DX10 has offered a lot of advantages over DX9," he added. "First of all, DirectX 10 allowed us to simplify the rendering engine. It matches capabilities of next generation consoles better than DX9, which is important for us considering that Stormrise is a multi-platform title. We had fewer driver-specific compatibility issues with Stormrise compare to our previous games released with DX9."
A new IP from Total War developers Creative Assembly, the small-scale RTS Stormrise was designed primarily with console controls in mind. The game is expected to arrive in stores on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this month.

Must be a pain to develop the same game on 3 completely different platforms!

- PC hardwares aren't so expensive now..
- The consoles' graphical power are at the middle of DX9 and DX10
so the DX10 has a lot advantage at the current state. It is more stable for example.
- By the way: the driectX 9 can't benefit from the dual core CPU-s because it can only see 50% from cpu-s power... and it is mostly an XP attribute...
Dont misunderstand me... I DONT LIKE DIRECT X... the whole thing is a crap... I Loved the OPEN GL technology

Vista is stable, and the DX10 level hardware is dirt cheap these days.

Personally, my earlier experiences with Vista put a horrible taste in my mouth, and while I'm sure most of the bugs have been patched up in one form or another, if I'm going to upgrade then I'm going to upgrade to W7 later. My gaming rig is an XP box and I have no real desire to switch to Vista just for one game.
But hey, call me lazy for not wanting to upgrade to the "driver-hell" that is Vista.
Last time I did upgrade, I got the constant "Your display driver has stopped responding" error when I played graphic intensive games.
It's all over the forums with no solution, so no, I will not be going to Vista anytime soon nor will I be buying this console ported "Stormrise".
Now maybe when Windows 7 is out I'll consider Stormrise, but I really doubt it will have the chops to pull me away from Dawn of War 2 or Men of War.

I just hope this doesn't become a trend until after I get Windows 7.
I think this is going to be very similar to when Crysis launched and the specs were so high it alienated their potential customers from purchasing it. Oh.. pirates got blamed for low sales on that one too.

I'm not sure I'm terribly enthused about a console-specific port for PC gaming. This is probably a pass barring some amazing and unforeseen reason to purchase this game suddenly appearing out of nowhere.

If you have Vista, go for it - check it out. If you don't, you're probably just NOT going to play this game.

Shouldn't come as any surprise when they do dick-all for PC sales, either, then. Seems like they've only got wood for the consoles anyway, so I doubt they'll lose much, if any, sleep on dismal PC numbers. *shrug*
In fact, on Win7 thanks to "10level9" you should be able to run the game on DX9 hardware (though probably not well, since the pieces that aren't supported by the GPU are handled on the CPU). But DX9 cards are going to be pretty thin on the ground among gamers in the Win7 timeframe anyway.
