StarCraft 2 Screenshots Show Updated Zerg Design

As the agonizing wait for StarCraft II continues, developer Blizzard has issued a few new screenshots of the PC RTS, revealing a more realistic look for the game's Zerg units.

"The StarCraft art team have been making massive updates to the Zerg faction, adding various new animations and improving even further on the textures of Zerg units and buildings," community manager Kevin "Karune" Yui wrote on the developer's forums.

Still no word yet as to when the anticipated sequel will arrive, though a multplayer beta is said to be coming in months. The studio has also said that it will release a major "frontline" title this year, but did not specify which of its upcoming games that may be.

The Baneling looks slightly better. All the rest look worse. And oh my god, the Zerg Overseer, they TOTALLY fckn RUINED that one. Higher res textures, sure, but they look worse. What is with this stupid trend of every game going into an orange-brown color scheme? Not to mention, these changes would seem to make instant identification much more difficult.

I love quite a few Blizzard games, so this isn't a hate post at all, but seriously wth. The more I look at Zerg units, the more it disturbs me how much they ripped off the Tyranids. Yes, I know this has been brought up a million times. But after looking at that one screenshot with the big ass creatures with the 4 talon arms I think I reached my bullshit limit.

I doubt if someone made an RTS and copied all of Blizzard's designs as blatantly as they copied Games Workshop that it would go uncontested by them.

They've said that units from the first game that aren't in the second will be available in the editor. Will units like the Reaver, Defiler, Firebat etc be undergoing gradual polish like the current units, or will they look graphically worse by the time it all comes out?

hopefully this implies they found a way to squeeze some more performance out of their engine, rather than making it more chuggchugg for more people... poly count seems to have went up.

Love it... just look at the detail they are adding... I can just see the Art Lead saying "Stop with all the fuckin' purples people! This isn't WoW or Diablo III! This game has to look like Starcraft 2, not Warcraft 4!"

Not that I'm against having color. I'm one of the, apparently, few that really loved the color palette for Diablo III. But Starcraft has a grittiness and grunge to it. So by all means, make the protoss a colorful bunch but keep the Zerg just like this... nice and beautiful, with a minimal of random purples highlighting them.

Keep up the FANTASTIQUE work Blizzard... You and Valve are practically in a world their own.

YAY! Slowly the dark gritty world of the original SC is poking through. I don't hate the new enviroments or look, but I did have a desire to see a more darker toned, war torn, athmospehere.

Hmm... a lot of the models seem to have gotten some color desaturation. I particularly liked the color
drone with the purple... spine? Whatever the fuck that is.

Same with the hydralisk :(. Oh well, the new models still look great.

I wonder if this is related to any nerd-rage from the diablo3 color controversy.

The overseer reminds me of some mutated blob of chumtoads from Half-Life, haha.

I actually like the original overseer better, but they all look pretty good. Love the new drone.

I'm really not digging the similarities between the Zerg units and the color of the creep. These screenshots seem to indicate that it could be kind of difficult to pick apart units while playing.

It's obvious that it was necessary the upgrade. The new design of those zerg units looks awesome, i really do hope that more units from zerg,terran and protoess will have the same facelift :)
