Pros
- This game looks fantastic. Beautiful art direction with some of the best texture work I've ever seen. I never thought a concrete wall could look so good.
- The scenes where you are chasing or being chased were fantastic. It forced you to run without thinking.
- The jumping puzzles were well done for the most part. When you finally figure them out there's a real sense of accomplishment.
- Running is just so fun. If the entire game was like this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg7-DDnRpXk it would be my favorite game ever.
Cons
- Combat is infuriating. There were four parts that I had to replay about 20 times each. By the end I was marginally better at fighting and didn't have too much trouble with the last level, but god, I wish they had designed the game where it was possible to avoid combat altogether by giving you alternate, hard-to-find paths to get around the bad guys. There were four parts during the game where I almost put the disc in the microwave. Watch what this guy does at 5:55. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vapSJ3M58K8 I tried the exact same thing 30 times. I was either killed before I made the jump to the walkway, killed by the first guard after failing to disarm him, or killed by the second guard further down the walkway after taking out the first guard. That's not fun, that's infuriating. I assumed I was doing it wrong, so I tried some other methods with even worse results (more guards show up after about 20 seconds). I swear to god I almost melted the game with a lighter.
- A few blind jumps break up the flow of running from time to time.
- The story was useless. What was that shit about training runners to take out the runners? I have no idea. And the big boss at the end was... some runner?
- The cutscenes were done in a totally different style from the game. If you invest so much effort to establish such a distinctive look for your game, why would you throw that out the window for the cut scenes, especially when you prove you could have done it by having several mini cutscenes in-engine in the middle of levels? I wish they had just stayed with the game engine the whole time. In the last chapter where you meet the white-haired cop in the middle of the level, it took me a few seconds to realize he was the same cop as in the flash cutscenes.
When it comes down to it, I'm glad I played the game, and I'm glad I didn't rage-quit at one of the combat parts that had me so pissed off, because there were some awesome chase scenes that I would have missed. If the entire game was just you taking the bag from point A to point B with some motivation to go fast (guys shooting at you, guys chasing you, or a time limitation), I would have loved something like that. The DLC looks fantastic http://www.shackvideo.com/?id=13374 and it's a step in the right direction, but I want an entire game of running on the rooftops. Dice, please do this for Mirror's Edge 2.

So.. i installed this based on shack recommendation.

I wanted to ask you guys if this happens to you:
The shortcut never works. I press alt+space and nothing happens. I actually changed this to Winkey+space and nothing happens either.
If i click the show desktop shortcut on my quicklaunch, all windows are minimized but i expected Launchy to be there on the desktop?
What else.. i try to run the program but nothing happens. Like i click the Launchy icon on my quicklaunch, and the program doesnt come up.
The thing is running.. It's there on task manager. So i dont get it.

A big what the fuck to Rockstar for this one.
Several nag windows about registering for this "Social Club" thing before it will even let me load the game. I figured, what the hell, I'll register for it in case I ever feel like playing multi-player. Apparently their web form is broken because it kept telling me there were errors with my form and to verify all the information. Well, that didn't work. Then I finally noticed there was a 'skip login' button on the Social Club window and loaded up the game (not after being nagged to registered with Social Club again).
Once the game was actually loaded I went to start a new game. Now it's asking me for a Live login. Grrr... And then I read "You have to have an account and be logged into it... JUST TO SAVE THE EFFING GAME."
Okay, that's a bit much to me. Seriously? I have to log into an online service just to SAVE my game progress? I could understand if it was to activate the game, like Steam, but the game already ran a little activation utility before the game loaded. Obviously I registered because I just spent $50 on the game. But my god, this seems like a bit much to me.

He endlessly whines and moans about how they keep their stuff closed, and they insist on developing their own standards instead of following the open standards that are already in place and blah blah fucking blah I just can't take it anymore. I understand and welcome the benefits of open source and free software (as in free speech, not free beer), but for fucks sake sometimes i think he is living in this fantasy world where Tux is his girlfriend and cooks steak and gives him blow jobs twice a day.
I was checking my Outlook Web Access from Firefox, and I made the offhand comment that it looks and acts differently in IE. Then this linux nerd rage comes out of nowhere "BECAUSE ITS MICROSOFT AND ITS PROPRIETARY AND ITS THE SUCK AND IF THEY FOLLOWED STANDARDS IT WOULD BE BETTER".
I will never turn on Microsoft. I may disagree with them, but if they want to develop their own framework, tools, back end, front end, gui, and develop their own closed standards, who the fuck am I to hate on them for doing what they want to do. I think $100 is a reasonable price to pay for an operating system for my computer, where he believes that as consumers, we shouldn't have to pay for our OS. 0_o
We agree on certain points like how I wish I could be able to customize my desktop more and he actually FINALLY admits that Windows 7 is snappy, easy to use, and good looking. (He refused to use Areo on the principal that "windows dont need to be shiny or transparent for any god damned reason....even though I know I've seen linux desktops 1000 worse than anything Vista could show you)
How do you deal with such blind, ignorant, zealotry? How do I convince him that the standard every day user DOES NOT FUCKING CARE where their OS comes from, who made it, whether its free or not, or what standards it complies to, as long as it does what they want/need it to do?
Are there any good articles explaining how the Microsoft of today is nowhere near like the Microsoft of the early 90s?

I'll paypal for a legit retail cd-key tonight if possible. Or if anyone knows how to get an inexpensive copy I'd appreciate it. Best I've found so far is a 'system builder' oem copy from Newegg for $100. I'd hate to pay anywhere near that for something I'll probably replace when Win7 comes around.

Obviously it's unlikely a nuclear explosion or anything other than a sinking/radioactive leak would have occurred, but the sheer BUMBLE factor here is interesting.
