Morning Discussion

It's looking like February and early March will deliver some solid games, so that's exciting. Just off the top of my head, I'm looking forward to F.E.A.R. 2, Killzone 2, Empire: Total War, Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad and Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers. And this early in the morning, I'm sure I'm forgetting one or two games.
Not to mention all that game-expanding DLC: the Prince of Persia epilogue, more Fallout 3 quests, and those two episodes for Tomb Raider: Underworld. And let's not forget that Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead DLC is due "soon"...maybe by March?
Shackpics can generate some weird results, like chicks with a LOT of dicks.

While I'm partial to the ones everyone always talks about (coffee can, fucking a stranger in the ass, etc.), the first fireplace scene with Jeffrey Lebowski is my favorite. Philip Seymour Hoffman's physical mannerisms are awesome in every scene he's in, but the look about halfway through is utterly amazing.

What iphone app do you use to check on wind / moon / tide stuff ?
The resolution of normal movie film is supposed to be significantly higher than HDTV. However I've sometimes wondered if the actual effective resolution of the image on screen was really that good. Watching something like The Dark Knight blu-ray where you have normal and IMAX scenes mixed in with each other makes me question this even more. If your "normal" movie is so much better than 1080p already, how can the IMAX stuff look so much sharper? (and I'm talking strictly about resolution, not other image improvements)
I was going to leave the post at this but then I did some googling. It seems that when people evaluate this stuff seriously, they focus on lines and not pixels. The first two pages I found were pretty decent, the first being the simple version and the second being the detailed study from which the numbers came:

Basically, with a team of vision-tested experts, they determined that in actual theaters the average resolution at the sharpest part of the screen was 750 lines. (per picture height, the same way 720p and 1080p are labeled) The highest resolution the experts could still discern in the sharpest part of the screen in the very best theater was 875 lines. (skip to the last page of the PDF for these numbers)
This kind of makes sense to me. Even at an ideal theatrical viewing angle, 1080p is approaching the limit of human vision, so there's not a huge reason to get the resolution better than that. With something like IMAX you need the resolution because you have extreme viewing angle both horizontally and vertically.
So I kinda feel my curiosity was justified. Even if you can technically store more pixels in a piece of film, the end result seems to not be quite as detailed as you get with a pristine 1080p source on a good TV with a proper viewing angle.

Most of the time when I start up any source engine game, I get loud noises coming out my speakers, if I do snd_restart enough times, it'll fix it but then sometimes the center channel is missing. This all started after I upgraded to 4GB of RAM but I'm still running XP 32bit and my system is overclocked. The thing is that no other game is showing any issues, only source engine games...wtf?

Anyone have any tips on it? I usually do week 1 twice just to get over the soreness. What do I need to be eating afterward? I usually have a big bowl of oatmeal about 10 or 15 minutes after the run, as I try to do it early in the morning right after I get up. Also, I have my Ipod Shuffle loaded with music, but any recommendations on running music would be appreciated!

We're going to have space for at least 8 PCs for a Left4Dead LAN, and we'll have Rock Band or something else going on in the living room. We'll have snacks, alcohol, soda, and probably order pizza if people get hungry. People should get here around 4pm and can stay as late as they feel like. We're night owls, anyway.
Our address is 27181 Huerta, Mission Viejo. If you're coming from the North, it's off the 5 freeway about 10 minutes after the Spectrum where the 405 and the 5 merge. Take the exit for Crown Valley Pkwy and turn left or Marguerite, then the first right into Cordova Canyon. At the bottom of the hill, go right, right, around the corner and left on the second street (Huerta) and we're at the bottom of the hill.
