Korean's had a machine that fired rocket assisted arrows, called the Hwacha, back in the 1450s. Mythbusters tested it on one of their shows. Pretty awesome. :)

*sigh* Total War games always seem really awesome to me. Once I start playing them, though, I get bored and frustrated with the constant switching between turn-based and real-time gameplay. I know you don't technically *have* to do the real-time battles, but the effectiveness of auto-resolution is always miserable. :(
