Writers Guild Nominates Fallout 3, Red Alert 3, High School Girls
by Nick Breckon, Jan 13, 2009 2:30am PSTThe Writers Guild of America has released its nominations for the best-written videogames in 2008, and the result is a fairly eclectic mix.
Fallout 3, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, Dangerous High School Girls In Trouble!, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Tomb Raider: Underworld all received recognition from the WGA.
Only games scripted by writers that belong to the WGA were eligible to be nominated. And the WGA charges dues, so who knows how many games they really had to choose from. Still, High School Girls!

Jay Lender here, I'm a WGA member and I'd like to clarify a few things about the WGA's Videogame Writing Award:
It is false, though widely reported, that nominees for the Videogame Writing Award need to be members of the WGA, and this fact can be easily confirmed here: http://www.wga.org/subpage_newsevents.aspx?id=2954
Nominees DO need to be (or become) members of the WGA's Videogame Writers Caucus, which is an advocacy group created by the WGA to improve the lives and work of videogame writers by connecting them with each other, educating them and fostering emerging standards in working method, credits and pay. Prospective members must have game writing experience to join, but in most cases a single game will do. Membership is $75 a year and does not confer full membership in the Guild, or all the rights and responsibilities of full Guild members.
As with last year's award, nominations must be made by publishers, the writers or their agents, managers, or publicists, and it is up to those parties whether your favorite games are even made available for consideration. For example, last year Mass Effect and BioShock were not submitted and therefore could not be considered for the award. Because of increased awareness, this year's crop of nominees will match more closely with industry expectations, but we hope you will remember that the award is for writing, not for gameplay, popularity or sales.
We're looking forward to continuing to help improve game writing and game writers' lives in the new year.
