EVE Online Records 45,000 Simultaneous Players
by Nick Breckon, Jan 05, 2009 2:10pm PSTDeveloper CCP today announced that its spaceship MMO EVE Online recently reached a peak of 45,000 concurrent players.
The impressive number tops the previous record of 35,000 simultaneous users.
Unlike most MMOs, EVE Online is operated as a single instance, allowing every player to communicate and meet up within the massive universe of New Eden.
The game has been a technical challenge to maintain, with users often testing the limits of CCP's technology by swarming single systems en masse.

I gave it a try multiple times - but it all boils down to one simple factor - EVE is the only MMO on the market that plays itself. No matter how much time or effort you devote, you will never be on par with those that started before you due to the gimmicky "real-time" skill timer.
To each his own I guess. If people want to fork over there hard earned cash and stare at a count-down timer for days/weeks/months/years - more power to them.

Since when does "on par" dictate "better than everyone at everything"?
If I invest time into a game, I want to see results. I got to the point where I had owned and outfitted a battleship, had enough ISK to purchase and completely outfit three more, and yet nowhere near the skills to fly or use said outfitted weapons. That's a bit of a game breaker for me.
As for purchasing characters - I don't believe in buying/selling other people's characters - those are for farmers, exploiters, and macroers - to which this game seems to cater quite well to I might add.
