EVE Online Records 45,000 Simultaneous Players
by Nick Breckon, Jan 05, 2009 2:10pm PSTDeveloper CCP today announced that its spaceship MMO EVE Online recently reached a peak of 45,000 concurrent players.
The impressive number tops the previous record of 35,000 simultaneous users.
Unlike most MMOs, EVE Online is operated as a single instance, allowing every player to communicate and meet up within the massive universe of New Eden.
The game has been a technical challenge to maintain, with users often testing the limits of CCP's technology by swarming single systems en masse.

I gave it another try but I feel so disconnected to the world when I dont have an avatar and space simply doesn't have much to explore with either.
Since I primarily Socialize and Explore in MMOs that's a problem for me.
I would love to join a corp and thus enter that fascinating social sphere I hear so much about but without a hook into the game I don't think I'd last. Each time I give it a try I hope to find that hook and one day I might do, perhaps walking in stations will do the trick.
We need more EVEs, i.e smart, mature and understanding the power of community so I am glad this game continues to grow.

I was looking forward to the Star Trek MMO, and then wait, what..warp gates? No thanks. People want instant gratification in all aspects of everything they are doing.
If I'm playing a space game in an established universe, I expect it to take a little while( Read: Not an extra 20 seconds ) to get from one place to another. EVE slips by because it is not an established universe, they can have space travel work however they want.
But in Star Trek, it has been established that travel still takes time. Warp is the quickest way though there are a few races and individuals who are pushing the limit. But, since players would balk at having to take actual time to travel, devs just toss in whatever means they want to get from one place to another in mere moments. I cry BS.
Stop wanting instant gratification people. Learn to savor the moment and build the expense. What do you think would happen if we were in space today? We just going to stumble into wormholes and automatically know how to build faster than light engines or another technology to travel that fast? NO.!
