Lord British Fired

A scoop for you guys, it seems Origin has fired Richard Garriot, better known as Lord British ( a pretty damn well known game designer, you just suck if you haven't heard of him). Guess they weren't happy with some things, or rather some game perhaps. Garriot was designer of the Ultima line of games, which were hugely popular. Not too many details right now, but you saw it here first! :) 4:45pm update Steve: Here is a quote from the Origin PR guy David Swafford from CrackedNuts:

Yes, Richard has decided to leave Origin to pursue other interests but he's not made any definite plans. We have eliminated 20 positions here at Origin, but it is having no impact on UOLive or UO2. I've seen reports out there that another 30 positions have been targeted and that's absolutely false. I'm sorry that info had to get out before I had a chance to respond to your email, but I just saw it."
Of course, word is this is just an April Fool's gag. I guess they started early this year. Knobs.

  • Ultima 9 was one of the worst gaming experiences I've ever had. I had to write walkthroughs for a gameguides.com guide, and I don't think I've ever been as frustrated during that game. The game was complete shit, buggy out the ass, crashed incessantly, was unfinishable as released, etc etc etc. They actually recommended going back to DirectX 6.1 from 7 (keep in mind you need to reinstall Windows to do this). Bugs that were fixed in one patch became broken again in the next. Eventually saves began to take up 5-10 megs apiece. It was complete and utter shit, and Origin's support decisions compounded the problems ("Hey, everyone's complaining about the game...let's shut down the boards and say there won't be any more patches, that's a good plan."). Once it became playable, it was okay at best.
