Lord British Fired
by Maarten Goldstein, Mar 30, 2000 2:15pm PSTA scoop for you guys, it seems Origin has fired Richard Garriot, better known as Lord British ( a pretty damn well known game designer, you just suck if you haven't heard of him). Guess they weren't happy with some things, or rather some game perhaps. Garriot was designer of the Ultima line of games, which were hugely popular. Not too many details right now, but you saw it here first! :) 4:45pm update Steve: Here is a quote from the Origin PR guy David Swafford from CrackedNuts:
Yes, Richard has decided to leave Origin to pursue other interests but he's not made any definite plans. We have eliminated 20 positions here at Origin, but it is having no impact on UOLive or UO2. I've seen reports out there that another 30 positions have been targeted and that's absolutely false. I'm sorry that info had to get out before I had a chance to respond to your email, but I just saw it."Of course, word is this is just an April Fool's gag. I guess they started early this year. Knobs.

Lord British has just been
* R O M E R O E D *
Sure i'm not a big ultima fan, but I played underworld 1 and 2, and sorry but them games were fucking l33t......
Firing Garriot would be like id software firing carmack...
Then again no one expected romero to get the ass from id either.

It doesn't seem like an April Fools joke.
They, EA, cancelled all OSI games in development except for UO2.
My opinion: if OSI is in trouble financially then current customers, players of UO, will suffer in some way. Even more so than if say 3dfx went out of business since their hardware will still work like it did with 3dfx in business. UO requires GMs and servers... (I hope I'm wrong)
is this the same guy who was supposedly invincible in uo but still got killed? what a loser. i dunno, i think i must have read an article or an interview which didn't leave me a good impression of him.

*hawkeye*
(absolutely loved it when LB was fragged in his own game.)
I once played a demo by this guy and it
kicked ass, but I lost it when I got
a virus. Fucking game kicked ass.
Just curious.
You all ca rag on Lord British all that you want,
but if I had a game company I would pick him up
in a second. Sure, the last few Ultimas were not
perfect, and Ultima 9 was buggy as hell, but the
games were still fun.

of course, it could just be a massive april fools joke, but the news reports don't seem to be.
