68% of Ex-World of Warcraft Players Return from Age of Conan, Blizzard Updates Warhammer Number
by Chris Faylor, Nov 06, 2008 9:02am PSTOver half of the subscribers that left World of Warcraft to play Funcom's rival PC MMO Age of Conan have since returned to World of Warcraft, developer Blizzard has revealed, adding that the return rate from Mythic's Warhammer Online is currently at 46%.
"To date, 68% of the players who listed Age of Conan as their reason for cancellation and 46% of the players who listed Warhammer as their reason for cancellation have reactivated their subscriptions to World of Warcraft," Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime explained during a financial conference call, as transcribed by Seeking Alpha.
Last month, Blizzard claimed that "a significant number of people, well over half" had returned to World of Warcraft from Warhammer Online after its September 18 launch. As for Age of Conan, which launched in May, Blizzard previously reported a 40% return rate.
Launched in 2004, World of Warcraft currently has over 11 million subscribers worldwide, with the game's second expansion pack, Wrath of the Lich King, due out next Thursday, November 13.

"To date, 100% of the players who listed Blizzards new MMO, World of Starcraft, as their reason for cancellation have since reactivated their subscriptions to World of Warcraft" Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime explained during a financial conference call.
Launched in the first quarter of 2011, World of Starcraft currently has over 17 subscribers worldwide. Blizzard has realized that World of Warcraft has created a resonance black hole cascade that prevents any player from ever leaving the game, even in favor of their own next gen MMO. Experts are concerned that the cascade could spread as far as Switzerland and swallow up CERN's Large Hadron Collider.

I would also point out that using AoC as a statistic is a bit disingenuous. You could take a poll of males ages 18 - 27 and ask them if they would prefer to return to WoW or be struck on the penis with a 5lb hammer. I'm thinking you would get a similar response in WoW's favor.....and that's not really saying much.

I've been following WAR more because I love the IP and I'm hoping that success there will give me an actual strategy game someday - one that doesn't suck quite as hard as Mark of Chaos / Battle March. Or an actual RPG, not an online one, that would be pretty sweet as well.
