I noticed that I tended to use the same strategies over several TW games so I'm hoping this will definatly shake it up a bit. Where do they go from here? Atomic Total War?
...and the trailer start sounds a bit like the start of the Battlestar Galactica TV show or is that me?

When a revolution occurs, you can side with either the revolutionaries or the loyalists. I suppose this was important for the American revolution section of the campaign.

Do I just suck at this game? or does everyone else just sim the battles after a point?

On a more serious note, I really really really hope they fix the unit AI - I loved me some Medieval 2 but the units were so annoying to manage, especially in close combat. Too many times have I seen a unit charge into another unit - oh wait, it wasn't the whole unit, just the first rank. Also, telling units to attack was pretty hit or miss if they were close to another unit - they might spread out, or half the people in a unit would rush by and then stand around watching their teammates get slaughtered. The trailer still has evidence of these flaws.
Fortunately, I'm pretty sure that Creative Assembly is well aware of these issues since they've been around since Rome: Total War at least. With a brand new engine I hope they have the resources they need to fix this problem this time.
