Leaked Warhammer 40K: Space Marine Footage Shows 'Intimate Brutality'
by Chris Faylor, Sep 05, 2008 10:01am PDTThe first footage of THQ's action-heavy take on the Warhammer 40,000 property has begun floating around the internet, showing off over nine minutes of the combat game and what the development team refers to as "intimate brutality."
While publisher THQ has yet to officially announce Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, with some rumors claiming the title has yet to be approved for full production, the Gears of War-esque game is believed to be in the works for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

However, there are a lot of things wrong wtih the universe being depicted.
- The Space Marine was holding a two-handed bolter in one hand.
- When using an off-hand chainsword, the other hand should be holding a bolt pistol instead.
- Bolters, of all types, are NOT machine guns. They are hand-held rocket launchers. Imagine a gun shaped rocket launcher that fires 2 to 3 rockets per second. The rockets moving at about twice the speed of a Quake 1 rocket. Though with smaller explosions.
- Bolter damage should be greater. An bolt should pass right through an unarmored target (punching a fist-sized hole) and explode against the wall behind him. A bolt should penetrate Space Marine armor, if it gets a solid hit and doesn't glance off. For an armored Space Marine: If a bolt round gets inside his armor, it will explode within. For limbs, that means limb loss. For torso, that means death.
BTW, Bolt rounds are huge.
About the size of a modest dildo.

GOW like or not it looks good and the camera crap can and will be fixed. Its just a promo video for fucks sake, You all whine like its the final product, Its overcritical fucks like you all that keep this kind of thing from happening more often. No producer in their right mind would take their labor of love and drop it into the shark tank of ungrateful hypercritical unapeasable shits that you all are. You all make me ashamed to even call myself a gamer OR fan of WH40k.
Just a bunch of punks.

To make this game awesome all they had to do was copy Gears of War, change assets to 40k, and add many more friendly/enemy AI units to the action -- but instead we get this.

I liked Dawn of War cause it was a very unique RTS. This shouldn't even be considered a RTS anymore, it's a RPG. I was very much hoping for another RTS. They should've branded it with a different name rather then DoW2 to reflect how different the game is from DoW. While it looks cool, I'm rather disapointed that this isn't a RTS.
No buildings, third person action, using abilities and having control of one or a couple characters. *sigh*

It'd be great if they realeased some kind of survial/squad style game that rewards you for staying together (kinda like left 4 dead), where you and a few other Marines have to fight through waves of cultists/tyranids/orks/babies/whatever. It'd be so much truer, and probably a better game than this, which looks like a cash in on the awesome 40k IP.
I'll probably just get DoW 2 for my 40k fix.

I'd rather just play Gears of War(2) dressed up in my semi-erotic chaos cultist costume drinking tomato juice and get the best of both worlds then.
Someone needs to remind these games devs that's it's alright to have an original ideal every now and then.

The part that made it feel 'off' to me is all the pauses. He'd be fighting and then just stop, turn around, look for someone else, and then finally run off to go after them. It really made it feel like the enemies weren't worth anything. Like he was WAY overpowered for the level he was on.
Could have been he was in God-mode for the demo I guess. Plus balancing would happen later.
Also, the 'cinemaction' moments could get old really fast. I wonder if everything else is paused during those.

Reading some of the other posts though, I agree, that the "Cinemaction" is just "bleh" at the moment. I believe Prince of Persia (the new one) has a fantastic way of showing the combat action. It doesn't really take the players perspective away, but just gets us closer to the battle by slightly changing angles, which gives us a "Cinemaction" like view. It's like you are still in control, but get an action shot.
I have to admit... the "Overkill" part of the video was just amazing. I like the idea of a mini-game where you can beat the crap out of someone. That looked amazing. If you didn't make it to that part, I suggest getting jumping forward to 8:15 into the video.

wonder how long this one will stay up ^.^

don't get me wrong, they're well done. but they seem to interrupt combat way too frequently. of course, playing the game and watching a video are two completely different things.
I don't say that as a Fanboy, I didn't quite like GOW, the camera movements made my stomach sick.
Anyway, I find that the person who plays this does not do a good job on demonstrating what is meant to be a dynamic fast paced game. It looks like he plays this the first time.

Combat looks clunky. You know what would help it, if it was based on full contact stuff, like football players, where you can plow into enemies as part of the combo, right now it looks like enemies in big pieces of armor that are too afraid to do anything/make contact. And they are rollerskating.
