Photography is a great hobby. It's fun and has money-making potential, but it is neither cheap nor easy to get into. There's a million review sites offering thousands of conflicting opinions on item in every facet of photography. It's bewildering and, quite frankly, this confusion makes it hard to make an informed choice when investing in your first camera.

Tonight was The Voyage Home and while it was good, it didn't seem to hold up as well as some of the other movies for me.
I was glad they got Saavik out of the way quickly, I was glad I was able to make fun of the Vulcans again for a bit at the beginning for being obvious Nintendo fanbois because of the Tri-Force on their acolyte robes, and of course the blatant product placement in the film was ripe for ridicule.
That said, while I am glad that the movie was good, I can see why they took the reins away from Leonard Nimoy after this one. Given his involvement with the story and the script, is it any wonder that Spock turned into the frickin' Mary Sue of this movie? Almost 90% of the "good ideas" or "good actions" in the movie were because of Spock, either directly or indirectly.
That said, the rest of the cast was obviously enjoying their roles...something that couldn't be said as much of the previous films. James Doohan especially loved hamming it up.
However, now that I have hit the peak, I need to prepare...for tomorrow evening we shall approach The Final Frontier.

What's a reasonable filesize to aim for when compressing it, and is iMovie the best OS X program to use to do that? I wouldn't mind shrinking it down to 320x240 as long as I can keep high audio quality.

I made a screen recording of me composing a song from scratch, sort of like those time-lapsed videos of artists painting a picture from scratch (that I love) but I haven't seen much of the same for musicians composing songs. This was unrehearsed (just sat down and started making it)
Uploaded to Vimeo for easy viewing:
http://www.vimeo.com/1611361
It last about an hour (feel free to skip around). I stopped then, and will probably do some more as I work more on the song.
So often you only see the finished product today (music, art, etc) that I love to see the innards of how other people create.

I picked up an Acer Aspire One for my wife at Best Buy for 350 bucks. It is the blue XP model with 120gig hdd and 1 gig of RAM. I have to admit, I really like this thing. I have no complaints except for the finish is too glossy and the fingerprints are hard to clean off. I will be promptly buying one of the 6 cell battery models for myself and putting Xubuntu on it. I never got the whole eeePC craze, but now that these tiny machines are starting to catch on, I am really starting to understand why.

So would I like the following? I've seen some pretty decent reviews:
-The Witcher
-The Longest Journey
-Dreamfall: The longest Journey
I'm also thinking about buying X-wing, Tie-Fighter and Xwing vs. Tie-Fighter and playing through the single player missions as I haven't done so in like 10 years! What would I need to load up on my XP machine to get those games working? Is there like a good DOS emulation program I'd need to load up to play those?

"I got everything into AVI, but these are like 30 minutes long and over 400 megs a piece in mpeg4 compression. If you want I can upload the avi to my webspace and you guys can edit them down into what you want for youtube, or I can just make generic 10 minute cuts in them and tube them directly."

Based on their literature, I think I am going to have monster cable and exceedingly overpriced things flashed in my face during the meeting, but I look forward to telling him I just need the expanded junction box in the basement so I can run CAT6/RG8 to each room by myself.
On that note--how does that work? Will the guys putting up the drywall later cut around wherever we put a cable drop, or do we have to somehow cause that to happen?

I'd like to use one of these to put all my docs/pics/music on so it makes it easy to change computers, but I did that in the past with an 8GB flash drive and it was really slow.

I've had their cables go kaput, and now a surge protector I got from them that ran me 100 bones just all of a sudden went dead for no reason. There was no surge, it just died. It was a gift otherwise I would have never bought their sorry ass shit.
Can any A/V people recommend me a solid power strip for game consoles / TV / receiver / etc...about 8 plugs and under 100 bucks?

I have a feeling i'm gonna ask something really stupid.
I have the iphone for 1 day now and i only started using it today.
I know you can buy screen film (or something like that) to protect from scratches or whatever.
But my question is, does the iphone also come with something like that from factory?
Because mine appears to have one and i sure didnt put it there.
Plus the home button needs to be pushed hard to work. Not sure if its the way it works or the plastic thing blocking it somehow.
