Survey: 70% of Developers Working on PC, Xbox 360 Tops Console Development
by Aaron Linde, Aug 14, 2008 12:27pm PDTSome 70% of professionals in the game development industry are currently at work on games for the PC, according to survey data presented by Game Developer Research.
The survey sampled 2,000 game development professionals from North America and elsewhere, in which 70% of participants said that they were currently developing titles bound for PC and Mac. 43% are creating games for consoles and 28% for web-based platforms, while just 16% of those sampled working on titles for handheld platforms.
Among the console developers, 73% of those responding to the survey are working on titles for the Xbox 360, followed by 58%—which includes some of those same Xbox 360 developers—working on PlayStation 3. 42% of participants reported work on the Wii, while 15% are creating games for the PlayStation 2.
Within those developers working on handheld platforms, the Nintendo DS held the lion's share of the raw numbers with 75% of the developers working on the system. 45% reported development on the PSP.

The survey pool was: "surveying almost 2,000 video game professionals from North America and beyond who read Gamasutra.com or subscribe to Game Developer magazine."
How many were indies, mod makers, startups, etc?
How many were producers, assistant producers, writers, QA, etc?
How many of those PC projects are console ports?
I think they've polled a primarily PC niche based on the pool they pulled from. I just feel it's skewed. I don't know for sure, but to put some perspective on how many developers are out there:
EA employs 9000.
Ubisoft employs 3500.
Activision employs 2000.
Nintendo employs 3400.
Sony Computer Entertainment employs 1200.
Take 2 2000.
VUG 3400.
THQ 1600.
The list goes on and on. I don't think anyone will truly know the answer. Whether you leverage with PC vs console sales or PC vs Console developers. How many licks does it take?
yeah... 3 :)

All you exclusive console gamers. Yes, you 360 owners who ditched the PC and now are the first to climb on the flame wagon to bad mouth PC gaming. It's time to buy an ATI HD 4850 video card and come back to the awesomeness that is pc gaming. Tell you what. You buy a 4850 and I'll buy Madden 09 for my PS3. They aren't that much difference in price. ;)

Companies could easily have 10 games for the 360 being made and only 1 for PC and the number of companies work on PC and 360 would be the same in this case. Just because a company is making a game for a certain platform doesn't mean at all that the platform will have the most games...(not sure if anyone assumed that or not, just wanted to clear it up)
