Morning Discussion
by Jeff "geedeck" Gondek, Aug 07, 2008 3:13am PDTSo our Nick is a quite the machine this week, with this piece welcoming our new console overlord. And in the hyperbole watch, we have "Video games are terrorists", though Shacker Zakazi helpfully tempers that statement with some first hand experience. And GoldenEye for XBLA? It's like a yeti, it might exist but the world at large will never know it. Oh hey, and you should participate in this contest while I judge to zombie moans and hope it doesn't cause the neighbors to bust in Ash-style.

TONIGHT - 6pm Pacific Time
Attention all The Ship fans!
Attention all would-be fans that don't own it!
TONIGHT I will be hosting a Shackbattle for The Ship. The Ship is an amazing game if you can get a group of fun players together and play the real modes (not deathmatch like 90% of the servers are.) If you have never had the joy of playing with friends, you should definitely join us as it's a huge blast.
GUEST PASSES For people who don't own the game: Every person who owns the game should have a 3-day "guest pass" that will let you play for free. Post requests in this thread for guest passes and hopefully an owner will be able to send you theirs. Do it sooner rather than later so you have time to download the game! It's a Steam game.
New players are 100% welcome.
Feel free to reply if you think you'll be able to make it. I'm not taking signups or anything but it will be good to know what the interest is like.

I never really worked with SMTP services before. Our little internal IIS-based SMTP server stopped sending out e-mails (we use it for our internal tools for notification, etc.).
Any tips or resources for debugging it?

i have a little list of shackers all over the country who do work for me pretty regularly and hirez is my sacramento guy but he sucks and is too busy this week for me! what a queer!
so, any shackers in sacramento who wanna make some money tomorrow post here and lemme know. i'll pay ya $100 an hour and i think i'm gonna need you tomorrow for 3-5 hours. not bad for a day's work! you could work for me for a couple of hours and then go buy a video game console!*
this is desktop level IT work, by the way. nothing major, nothing crazy, and if it gets too major or too crazy i'll just walk you through it so it's kinda easy regardless!
exclamation mark!
*I don't know how you're going to buy the video game console since it'll probably be the middle of next week before you get your check. Maybe a credit card or something? I'm not going to tell you how to live.

Bourne Identity:
Why would he have a laser beam account number embedded into his body just for one mission. It is like he realized he might get amnesia so he should find a full proof way to make sure he got back to all of his money and passports. I'm calling bullshit on my iphone.
Feel free to talk about other movies more than a year old that all of the sudden don't make sense because you're procrastinating on something and making fun times in your head. But don't be typical dorks and bring up star wars.

Haha the last time I've watched this movie I was 11 I think. So funny. Will try to find it to rent this weekend.

Sebastian-TEC and I were passing through Santa Cruz on our way back from QuakeCon (yea... going to Seattle) and we hooked up with SolveChrist and his wife for some brews, Wii, and sleep (thanks for putting us up for the night!)

And now with our powers combined, the Saints of SolveChrist are stronger than ever. Watch out, TF2 Tourney.

Today, the guests were all women with strange phobias, like being afraid of Jell-O, chicken, and cotton balls. Instead of helping these women or having a psychologist talk to them, Maury and his audience laughed at them, and Maury went to extremes to torture them. For example, Carolyn, a woman who is deathly afraid of cotton balls, has had a recurring nightmare for most of her life about a man made of cotton balls who tries to kill her. So Mo had two guys dress up in cotton ball costumes and chase her around the studio.

I am talking about drama that happens in the gaming community. Like the hilarious EVE Online stories about crazy corporate espionage or the developers cheating in their own game.
There haven't been many stories lately but I always love reading about them. I think reading drama like that is way more fun than actually playing the game.
List some of your favorite gaming moments like that (not moments of just killing a boss or something)...

Ending discussion below.
So, a lot of people have issue with the way the last 1/4 of the movie or so. This is because it went from an engrossing and intelligent sci-fi film to a crappy slasher flick very quickly. It sucked. But I was thinking recently: how could the ending be different?
This is given:
-The other Icarus failed. Why it failed had to be explored, and it could not be a simple mechanical glitch.
-The movie did not have much action for the first 1/2 or so. Still, it was building to a climax, one which had to be explored. Again, if an ending had a random mechanical glitch the ending would be unsatisfying.
In short, I could not think of a better ending. With the way the movie was, did the writers write themselves into a corner or what? Anyone have a better idea?

Okay, Shack, I have a question. How do you keep your e-mail organized and not lose track of e-mails you need to deal with later or respond to? I have GMail, so it should be easy with filters and stars and stuff, but the basic problem is, at some point I stopped dealing with things on a regular basis, so now I have thousands of e-mails still in my inbox (in theory I should only be leaving things in my Inbox if I know I need to deal with them or reply to them but can't at the moment), they aren't labeled so I'm afraid to just archive them all, and while I used to only get random bs e-mails from friends, I'm now receiving an absurd number of e-mails that contain both important stuff and nonsense from my family, a tax lawyer, an estate lawyer, my financial planner, my friends, my frisbee teams, and various and sundry other sources. I've tried to get things under control, but it is absurdly overwhelming. I used to star things when I needed to remember them, but now I have starred e-mails going back years that I forgot to unstar. Etc.
TLDR: I am hopelessly disorganized and need to sort through a couple thousand e-mails in a way that will not make my head explode or cause me to miss an important meeting or not get some paperwork done that's probably very important.
Thanks -Steph

I thought it took a severe dip with episode 5 and I was worried it was kind of done for, but 6-10 were so fucking awesome. I caught up with them last night and was crying with laughter at a couple of points.

Brilliantly made. Kinda pissed it's the "end of Part 1" though, should quit while ahead unless they have somewhere they're going to take it...
I guess the end opens the door to parodying Japanese Godzilla type movies
It does hurt my brain, though.

I wish I could remember some of the other games they were selling, but I was with my six year old dude to buy Battlefront 2 for us to play together and it was the only thing I saw that I was interested in. I saw Cars Maternational and Golden Compass in the same area, so you know this was pretty much bottom of the barrel stuff ... and Conan. ;)
