PS3 Movie and TV Show Downloads Arrive Tonight; Pricing, Details Revealed

Sony announced today that the PlayStation 3 will tonight begin offering video downloads of television shows and movies from studios such as Sony Pictures, Fox Film, Lionsgate, Disney, Paramount, Turner, and Funimation.

The video store will offer both rental and digital sales of television shows and movies. SD and HD versions of television shows will sell for $1.99.

Movie rentals will run from $2.99 to $5.99, with movie purchases going up to $14.99. AS one would expect, HD version of the movies will be available as well.

Sony explained that it would take about an hour to download a regular SD movie, but playback is available beginning a minute after the download begins.

The videos will also be viewable on the PSP via a USB data transfer or a download from the PC version of the PlayStation Store.

$2 for a TV show is still way too high. Maybe to buy forever that would be ok, but 99% of the TV shows I want to watch once and move on. For a rental I'd want the price around a quarter per show. For a 20 episode season that would be $5. I think that's reasonable.

I wouldn't pay for SD TV shows.. but I would for HD because actual HD subscriptions are expensive as hell here and I only watch three shows that are worth watching in HD to begin with.

I bet all the HD movie rentals are the 5.99 ones -_- there is a reason why I stopped watching blu ray movies on my ps3.. because im not going to pay blockbuster 5 bucks to watch a movie when i can go to another store and rent the SD movie for 2

Any idea if the HD movies will be 720p or 1080p? I know on XBox Live I have not seen anything more than 720p. 1080p would be tempting, though freakin' huge :)
