Microsoft: Gamers 'Graduate' from Wii to Xbox 360, Claims Wii Has 'Karaoke Machine' Novelty
by Aaron Linde, Jul 07, 2008 10:47am PDTMicrosoft Xbox 360 product management director Aaron Greenberg has reaffirmed that the company does not see the Wii as a direct competitor to its console, explaining that Nintendo's customers may eventually "graduate to an Xbox 360 experience."
"I think that there's a difference in the type of customer that is buying the Wii," Greenberg told Gamasutra. "When you think about it, there's a difference between trying to be the number one console with nine year old gamers, and being the console that offers the most experiences from 13 to 33."
"I think for us, we don't really see the Wii as a direct competitor, we actually very much complement the Wii experience," Greenberg added. "It's obviously clear that we're going head-to-head with the PS3 in this generation. I think what Xbox will be able to do as well as the Wii is grow the market."
Greenberg's statements continue Microsoft's public snubbing of the Nintendo Wii. Last May, the company claimed that the Xbox 360 was the world's top-selling "high definition gaming console," a phrase that nicely excludes the Wii's substantial lead of 24.45M units against Microsoft's 19M.
"I think that a lot of the people that are buying that console today are not people that have generally bought consoles in the past, right? You see they're not buying games on it...it's almost like the same people that buy a karaoke machine, you know? They're not really buying it for games, they're just buying it as a novelty," Greenberg noted.

If you are a hardcore gamer, the graduate reference really rings true. If you're a casual gamer then the reference is not meant for you.

PS3 for games that are console only and Blue Ray
Wii for casual fun gaming and enjoying the classic chararters/franchises (mario, zelda, etc)
No 360 unless you want to support the borg corp. You youngsters weren't around during the early days of pc growth (not gaming). Microsoft is evil. They'd put everyone out of business if they could by stealing their technology or buying them out. Look how much they stole from pc technology to make their xbox consoles.

I don't know ANY gamer who didn't have a Nintendo product as their first gaming system (I'm only 18 so Amiga, Commodore 64, etc. are not applicable to me. ALSO: Not saying it isn't possible). I personally started out on SNES and started playing PC games halfway through my Gamecube's lifespan, playing the Game Boy, GBC, GBA, and the N64 along the way. My friends started on the N64 and went up the Nintendo ladder from there (most of them buying Playstations and/or Xboxes as well)
I love my Nintendo games. They were my childhood. But I do feel I have "graduated" onto hardcore gaming on my PC.

MS can posture and talk big all they want, they are after the same thing Nintendo is, and Nintendo is doing it better.
None of the people I know who have purchased a Wii exclusively have any interest whatsoever in a 360. Some of them might consider a PS3 if blu-ray really takes off, but a hardcore gaming machine isn't something they want. They want "the bowling game" and Wii Fit. They could not care less about which version of the unreal engine the game runs on, or how many polys there are in a scene.
The problem is that the hardcore crowd just doesn't understand this at all. They don't get that a 40 year old woman doesn't want to play a game where you slaughter hordes of demons and fuck chicks with big titties, no matter how realistically rendered said titties are.
So does MS realize this, and just keeps talking big to save face, or are they really so stuck in the hardcore gamer market mindset that they believe that the Oprah crowd is going to graduate from Wii Tennis to Gears of War 2?

Calling Wii gamers 9 year olds actually turns me off from ever wanting to support XBOX.

My biggest gripe is that while the motion controls are fun for some games, they are incredibly annoying for others. Sometimes I just want to relax on the couch and move only my fingers. I get enough of a workout from the gym -- games are for relaxation.

Greenburg is absolutely right, it is a different type of customer buying the Wii, but rather than exclude those consumers by making those statements, they should embrace them as there are 20x + more casual gamers out there than there are "hardcore" gamers.

My girlfriend spent $800 to get me one last Christmas, I played Mario Galaxies for about a week, and the entire system has been collecting dust somewhere, I don't even know where it is.
I feel horrible that my girlfriend spent so much on something I don't use. Mr. Greenberg hit the nail right on the head with his statement.

I should also put a good word in for Half-Life 2 Wii- swinging the Crowbar w/the Nunchuk is just pure win =)
my wii has about 8 or 9 that i've played the shit out of, plus i never worry about it breaking.
i want to like the 360 so fucking bad, but it's hard when the people who make the games for the console have no imagination or originality >:(

Between the 360 and the PS3, I went 360. I also own a PSP, and it's just not needed to cover all the gaming bases. Lots of the PSP games are just trimmed down versions of PS2 or PS3 games, made portable.
If I could only have one system, it'd be my PC, and if I could have two, I'd add my 360. The Wii is an optional, if very desired, 3rd choice. DS probably ties it. If I travelled more, the DS could be as high as 2nd.

Most studies show the WIi as a secondary console system, and very little uptake in households that have not ever previously owned a console. The age point can stand (Wii/DS is more popular among those aged 9-13 than Xbox, and Xbox is more popular in the 13-18 crowd than the Wii, but they are both plenty popular).

I think someone is just complaining that they haven't been able to capitalize on the massive market that Nintendo has and is doing something to make themselves feel better.
