Diablo 3 Class, Story and Gameplay Details
by Nick Breckon, Jun 30, 2008 2:12pm PDTAfter weeks of speculation, Blizzard has officially announced Diablo III at its World Wide Invitational event in Paris.
Said to feature more quests than ever, the anticipated sequel will stick to its roots by being "first and foremost a cooperative game."

Diablo III will feature old standards such as the quotable Deckard Cain, as well as a new version of Tristram and a fresh class dubbed the Witch Doctor. The jungle-born warrior will use ancient tribal magic to cast disease and mind control spells, in addition to utilizing pets such as locust swarms and mongrels.
The game will also include several control improvements, including full zoom capability and a hotbar to easily access skills. Players will be able to quickswap between skills using the mouse wheel or tab key.
Armor will now be class-specific, designed to provide each character a unique look. Classes themselves are more diverse, as it was noted that there will be female versions of both the Barbarian and Witch Doctor.
In a demo of the Barbarian class, the company noted that less of an emphasis will be placed on potions for health. Instead, red orb-like items will drop that immediately recover health once the player picks them up.
Environmental destruction was also shown off, with a character at one point busting through a solid wall. The environment can also be used to kill enemies, as in the case of objects that fell from a wall, killing a group of monsters.
Enemies were shown to be larger in scale than in past games, with giant evil trees and a massive demon called a Siegebreaker.
Blizzard has released a set of official features and a story description, which can now be conveniently viewed below the fold:
Two decades have passed since the demonic denizens, Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal, wandered the world of Sanctuary in a vicious rampage to shackle humanity into unholy slavery. Yet for those who battled the Prime Evils directly, the memory fades slowly and the wounds of the soul still burn.
When Deckard Cain returns to the ruins of Tristram's Cathedral seeking clues to new stirrings of evil, a comet from the heavens strikes the very ground where Diablo once entered the world. The comet carries a dark omen in its fiery being and it calls the heroes of Sanctuary to defend the mortal world against the rising powers of the Burning Hells--and even the failing luminaries of the High Heavens itself.
- Explore a fully-realized Sanctuary--the living, breathing gothic fantasy world of Diablo III rendered in gorgeous 3D.
- Battle the unholy forces of the Burning Hells with all-new character classes like the otherworldly Witch Doctor, or with re-imagined warriors from Diablo's past: such as the fierce Barbarian.
- Rain Hell on your enemies wielding the interactive environment as a weapon: lay cunning traps, turn destructible objects against your foes, and use environmental obstacles to your advantage--all powered by the Havoc physics system.
- Experience the intensity of multiplayer Diablo III over an all-new, wickedly-enhanced Battle.net platform with numerous enhancements to make connecting with your friends easier--and cooperative gameplay more fun.

So I am creating a new character, and it appears that I can either create a singleplayer character or a battle.net character. If I create a battle.net character, can I still just play through the story by myself sometimes, and with other people sometimes? And if I just create a singleplayer character I can't take it online then?

Not hating here but especially unimpressive is the graphics which don't even surpass Guild Wars from how many years ago. The environment is fine, but probably the most important thing in the game is your character, and we've gone from attractive low-res painted art to... http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/characters/barbarian.xml uhhh world of warcraft? And that clipping error front and center adds insult to injury.
I hope for the best, but it looks like "best" might be just more of the same in 3d. And by more of the same I mean more of Diablo II at release, not the genius library of work that is Diablo II LOD after 5 years of patching. Unfortunately duplicating Diablo II isn't a feat today because it has been done so many times already... including by free korean rpgs-of-the-month.
In any case Guild Wars 2 will probably land around the same time, so this is fixing to be a battle of two titans.

I figured that they would have this game done by now...mainly because i really dont think i can wait another year haha...epecially now that they have confirmed it
Seriously, in this day and age, why is there no 360/PS3 version of this game? They're literally just throwing away money.

If you click it, it turns purple. Surely this is a throwback to battle.net's jewel that really didn't do anything, but perhaps it does? Anyone try anything or know anything about this?

I am worried about the armor being class specific though. Every piece of armor only being usable by one class sounds like it's going to cut down on the diversification of builds of different characters. Unless they're planning on having a shit ton per character.

I just dont think the shots of the new game are nearly as interesting as the current WoW engine in terms of really bringing you into the world, but then again, maybe i just dont get diablo.

That's the sound I made when I saw this. My wife is still trying to get the stains out of my pants.
So now that I got that out of the way, who else is suddenly feeling up to replaying D2?

At first the gameplay video bored me to tears, but later on, as the enemies became more difficult it started looking pretty decent. I'm not sure that i'm cut out for isometric gameplay though... Here's to hoping they will have a demo!

Then on a hot summer day in July 2000, I went out, bought the game, went back home and put the first CD into the tray and as the sweat poured down, typed in the CD key whilst reading the manual. On the fourth CD I accidentally pressed Escape and the installation was aborted. I couldn't believe it, the suspense was too much. But I started over. The wait seemed like forever but I held out.
Then came bliss.
I've played other good games since but damn, that whole experience just isn't something I get anymore, these days. Blizzard sure have quite a task ahead of themselves.

It looks like the Minotaurs are attacking the skeletons, I wonder if they are going to be an ally, and I also wonder if they are going to have the same level event they did in act 5 from diablo 2 were the barbarians are defending their homeland.
