Its a waste of time for devs, and a pain in the ass for gamers. Not to mention nothing new for crackers to get past.

the reason is because it adds to the overall experience rather than detracting from it, with Steam i can install a game on as many computers as i want and it only matters how many computers are actively playing with my account, plus i can re-download the game any time i want, and patches become largely painless
systems like SecuROM and StarForce do nothing but detract from the overall experience, with StarForce, for example it freaks out if you have disc emulation going on or if you have the wrong type of drive, not to mention it being fairly tough to remove once it's on there and neither system does anything to combat piracy, the pirated versions of software with those systems are largely better than the legitimate versions because they're not fucking with your system
