Nielsen: Xbox 360 Dominates Console Play Time

by Aaron Linde, Jun 05, 2008 11:19am PDT

Data compiled by consumer research group Nielsen and discovered by IGN found that both younger and older console gamers spent most of their time playing the Xbox 360, followed by the Wii, with the PlayStation 3 coming in third.

The data reflects console play time between April, 2007 and February, 2008. In that time, gamers aged 10 to 26 spent almost 63% of their game time with the Xbox 360, followed by the Wii at nearly 25% and the PlayStation 3 at 12.3%. Gamers aged 27 and above played the Xbox 360 for roughly 52% of their time, followed by 28.4% and roughly 20% for the Wii and PS3, respectively.

Nielsen also found that while older gamers played shorter session lengths than their younger counterparts, they tended to play more sessions in a given day. Also of note is the average usage days per month: younger gamers played their Xbox 360 on average of almost 28 days per month, versus 21.6 for their older counterparts.

The data was compiled in a manner similar to how Nielsen tracks TV ratings, using what the firm describes as 'people meters' to track console usage. Though Nielsen also tracks PC gaming usage, that information was obviously not represented in this data.

  • I know why the 360 people play the 360 more than any other console... it's because those achievements are so damn addictive! I sometimes find myself with nothing else better to do than go around shooting pigeons in GTA4 just because I want the achievement. I don't feel like I've fully completed the game unless I've completed most of the achievements as well. However, I do enjoy playing GTA4 as well.

Now if only Microsoft found a way to reward people for reaching certain gamerscore milestones. For example, after getting 10,000 points you receive a message with a unique key that unlocks a custom theme for the dashboard or say 100 Microsoft points? I know 100 M$ points isn't a lot; however, it will probably get me to spend a little extra to buy a XBL game. Say 50,000 points gets you 500M$ points and 100,000 points gets you 1000M$ points. Just think how much money M$ made from the customer after they achieved the 100,000 point milestone.

    Anyways, achievements rock! ha.
