Sony: PlayStation 3 Outsells Xbox 360 In Europe

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves said that Sony's PlayStation 3 has outsold Microsoft's Xbox 360 in Europe, having moved more than 5 million consoles since launch, Eurogamer reports.

Speaking at the PlayStation Day event today, Reeves added that the PlayStation 3 managed to surpass the Xbox 360 despite the rival console's 16 month head start, and outselling its competitor on a month-by-month basis since October of 2007.

"We are particularly proud of this as it has been achieved in a similar time frame as PlayStation 2 which retailed, if you remember, at a significantly lower price," Reeves noted.

Among other sales figures divulged in the press conference were a total of 12 million PSPs and 48 million PlayStation 2s units moved in lifetime sales in the European territory.

I haven't touched my PS3 in months...not since I finished Uncharted. System desperately needs some exclusives, or at least a better online suite so I'd consider 3rd party software over my 360. Not that much on the horizon either...just one or two games.

I'll probably get a PS3 to put alongside my 360, but only when the price drops below $300. And 90% of the reason I'll be getting it is for the Blu-ray. The PS3's exclusive titles don't appeal to me at all. The only games I ever buy for the PS3 might be Wipeout HD and God of War. Metal Gear looks like the lamest Japanified POS I've ever seen. And I'll take Oblivion, Sacred 2, Too Human, or Age of Conan over any crappy Japanese RPG any day of the week.

I guess Europeans don't play games. :)

Most of my German buddies are PC gamers... but one did buy a PS3.. he watched blu-ray movies on it for a couple months then sold it for a profit (because backwards compatibility is big over there).

In internet terms I'd probably be considered an Xbox fanboy but I assumed they'd done this already - Europe and Japan are total Playstation territory. If they manage to take the worldwide lead it'll be from these two regions.

Still not sure if we'll see the PS3 catch up to the 360 in North America or not; with the exception of a couple months the gap is still widening. Will be interesting to see if GTA skews the system sales numbers in either direction.

Well that's great and all, but that doesn't factor in how many xbox 360's were sold in the time the PS3 wasn't released. There comes a time when people who want a console get it.. you only buy one you know.

There still isn't anything exclusive to PS3 that makes me want one. However, I think if they both DID came out at the same time I would of leaned toward the PS3 (having no knowledge at the time of the greatness that is XBL and general DLC).

On the other hand, I still do play Halo 3 everyday (my gf is very competitive in it so she makes me stay on top of my game) so I think I would of ended up buying a 360 anyway.
