Microsoft: Still No Plans for Blu-ray on Xbox 360

I think they're being stupid here. Lots of people are buying PS3s instead of 360s purely because they get BR playback as a bonus. If they removed that difference then they'd get more sales, and presumably enough that it would justify the expense of creating the hardware add-on and software to run it. (Or maybe they don't think so?)

I'm sure they want to, but Sony is saying no, since PS3 sales would go back to what they were.

i think you may see a blu-ray add on ... but not internal drive... why up production costs?

They don't need a blu-ray, they need to release a real fucking hard drive with a decent price, not this 120GB overpriced shit, and get in bed with someone to start doing digital HD distribution.

meh digital downloading is the future...everyone will have TB drives soon anyhow. besides as much as i like have a collection of stuff i dont like re buying my favorites in a different format each time a new player comes out either. so there ya have it...

Why the hell not? Lost oddyssey was four discs and now they just nabbed that "tales of:" series as exclusive, are we gonna have more 4 dics games for 360?

They're just blowing smoke up our asses. They are going to have a Blue-Ray drive very soon. With games like GTA IV out in the wild right now selling like hotcakes they want someone to buy their console now, not wait to buy it later.

I wouldn't want to watch movies on a 360 or a PS3 with the amount of noise they generate anyway. I also don't feel like there are enough movies in a year that are worth watching in the first place.

I'd rather they announce some type of subscription service for Marketplace that allows me to rent any HD movie for 10 or 12 dollars a month.

Translation: "We are announcing it at E3, and will deny it until then."

There is certainly no point in MS blowing any wind into Sony's sails. The impending failure of the entire disc based HD market is something they want to distance themselves from especially in light of current sales levels for BD products post HD-DVD death. Seems like the PS3 will be the ONLY BD device being sold in quantity for quite a while, mainly due to it's fallback as a gaming device and secondly due to it's upgradeability. Most folks wont pony up 400-1000 bucks for a dedicated video player when they know the discs are gonna set them back 30 bones a piece. That and all the non PS3 BDs out there are already broken, non upgradeable door stops. MS may indeed embrace BD at some point in the future (mainly when it doesn't jack up their bill of goods for the x360 to loss levels) but there is simply no reason to do so now. Until the movie studios stop charging extreme premiums for HD content ownership, the rental market will benefit immensely. Renters are completely platform agnostic and just want the content without the hassles. Downloadable HD content is already here and gaining steam and in many cases doesn't require special equipment (other than a set top box or mainstream PC or X360). This will allow it to continue to blossom while disc based content continues to be a fringe purchase.

blu-ray won't be a viable video medium for another 2-3 years, good decision microsoft

Maybe they should consider that when I pick up a blue ray player it WILL be the PS3 because right now it is the BEST OPTION CLEARLY.
