Valkyria Chronicles Trailer Illustrates Fine Filter Use

Sega today released a new trailer showing off its PlayStation 3-exclusive RPG Valkyria Chronicles.

Powered by Sega's internally-developed CANVAS engine, Valkyria is shaping up to be one of the more striking examples of a cartoon-quality graphical style. The game itself is set in a fictional version of 1930s Europe, with combat that features a mix of tactical battle and real-time controls.

Expect Valkyria Chronicles to hit sometime this fall on PlayStation 3.

Can any computer graphics gurus give me a quick run down on this type of rendering? Is it harder to write shaders for that than going for a realistic look? What if I decide to render things in water color fashion or impressionist? Is an art style like that harder to implement than going for realism?

Engine looks amazing. Content of the game will have to win me over, but I definitely support games that go for cell shading in their art direction. I've pretty much loved every game that went with the cartoon look and will take anything I can get that uses it.

Everyone talks about "photo-realistic" "pixar" quality gfx. This is the first example where I'd say they really did achieve the target they were aiming for. I think this looks so good that its pretty much indistinguishable from a modern cartoon.
