Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Apr 08, 2008 6:00pm PDTI've been pretty ho-hum about the GTA franchise since playing through about half of
Vice City but I'm pretty sure when href="http://www.shacknews.com/tag.x/Grand+Theft+Auto+4">Grand Theft Auto 4

"YO, GTA4, I WANNA LIKE - TASTE YOU."
Well holy shit it's close. Just under 3 weeks? 3 weeks until I get to kill policemen, become addicted to vigilante missions, drive off of jumps in slow motion while cop cars fly after me in the rain while listening to classical music, crash helicopters into the traffic below, etc, etc etc. Good lord I hope it's as awesome as I want it to be. :)

It's reporting on research into the "Police Officer's Dilemma" at the University of Chicago's Psych department:
"Since 2000, we have been working to develop and refine a first-person-shooter videogame, which presents a series of images of young men, some armed, some unarmed, set against realistic backgrounds like parks or city streets. The player's goal is to shoot any and all armed targets, but not to shoot unarmed targets. Half of the targets are Black, and half are White. We have used this game to investigate whether decisions to "shoot" a potentially hostile target can be influenced by that target's race."
They've made the beta version available here: http://backhand.uchicago.edu/Center/ShooterEffect/
I guessed wrong four times (they give you 100 shoot/don't shoot decisions) shooting people with cell phones twice and failing to shoot twice at people with guns. Good thing this isn't something that's part of my job.
Also, I appear to be, sadly, biased in favor of shooting Black targets. Also I'm slow. (I thought years of twitch gaming would give me an edge there, but no. Shooting folks is a young man's game)
Game Over
Your Score: 490
Average reaction time:
Black Armed:690.24ms
Black Unarmed:820.64ms
White Armed:718.28ms
White Unarmed:800.84ms

Picked up Best Buy's "top of the line" Sony ear buds over lunch yesterday because I really wanted to listen to music when I got back and I've been meaning to pick up a pair of ear buds:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8703272&st=sony+ear+buds&lp=6&type=product&cp=1&id=1199495404169
I used to own some Etymotic E6i's and they sounded great, but lacked low end. These Sony's have decent low end but don't come anywhere close to the Etymotics as far as clarity.
I've thought about going with some Shure's. Any other recommendations? I don't mind spending money if they're good (the E6i's were $100+) but I'd like stick around the $50 range if possible but ONLY if it's worth it. Otherwise I'll just pick up some cheapo iPod buds or something. This is mostly just for listening to music at work.

We are also helping each other out incredibly. LOTRO was built around the concept that the crafting professions are dependent (mostly) on the other professions - so if there is something you need, a blade, some ancient cryptic texts, etc, you ask, and a shacker is always ready to supply, or willing to run out and farm hides or whatever to get what you need. I asked for a full set of armor for my alt yesterday, and within an hour, two shackers had harvested enough hides to craft and complete the set.
Not to mention the willingness for quest help that is constant - people are constantly setting up fellowships for questing. A few weeks ago, when I started pimping this, I'll admit, I was selfish - I wanted a few other shackers to play so that me and my buddy wouldn't have to team up with strangers. That hasn't happened once.

How in the HELL am I supposed to kill the big bad Typhon as a melee class?
On my best of 6 tries, I managed to chip him down to... about 80%. Then in 2 hits (his health-inhale, and a claw swipe while my potions were on cooldown) he obliterated me.
What. The. Hell.

It's ridiculously stupid. ISPs constantly offer the fact that you can download at "high speeds" and keep doing more and more stuff online, but now that a lot more people are taking to it, because of a feature like BBC's iPlayer, they don't want to deal with it. Perhaps they should stop being such shitty companies and offer a solid fucking service.

PHP mens,
i need every hundredth between 1-4 to round up to 5, and any hundredth between 6-9 to round up to 0 and increment the tenth. so 14.21 goes to 14.25 and 14.26 goes to 14.30, while 14.20 and 14.25 stay the same.
my code below works for most numbers, but i found that certain ones like 4.02/4.06/5.02/5.06 don't work. why?
//{{
function moMoney($adjustedPrice){ $newPrice = $adjustedPrice*100; while($newPrice % 5 != 0) { $newPrice++; } return $newPrice/100;}$adjustedPrice = 5.02;$finalPrice = moMoney($adjustedPrice); echo number_format($finalPrice, 2);
}}//

but does the PS3 have an optical audio port on it?
I am itching for that blu ray player again and I plan on using HDMI for the video, and then hoping there is an option to send the audio through Optical to my receiver. Unfortunately my receiver only has optical ports.

I'm on Mission 7 in the single player, and I just have to ask -- is there any variation at all in the missions? So far every single mission has been "build an army, follow the road to the end of the map killing everything and capturing points along the way." I find the game somewhat intriguing, but it's getting a little old.. :/
