Alleged New Sonic Media Surfaces

by Chris Faylor, Mar 24, 2008 1:59pm PDT

An abundance of supposed media from the next Sonic the Hedgehog game appeared online across the weekend, giving gamers what many believe to be the first look at the blue speedster's next adventure.

While Sega has yet to officially announce the game or comment on the media, the title is rumored to be known as Sonic Unleashed, with the resolution of the screenshots suggesting it is being developed for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. According to the rumors, the title is expected to release later this year.

In all, the materials included a whopping 82 screenshots--70 in-game, 12 cutscene stills--along with a short gameplay video, which is viewable below.

  • This is a good move as long as they consider this:
2D sonic games were fun because of specific aspects not present in the 3d games,

    1) Balance of exploration and continuous flow of gameplay:
-the 3D sonic games caused the character to stop flowing to explore, or to not be able to explore because he was moving too fast with the camera trailing him
-the 2D sonic games allowed the character to flow right or left while allowing him to explore up or down.

    2) "Wrong moves" less punishing, more skillful
-In 3d sonic, it was easy to jump off random cliffs because you misjudged a jump because of the nature of 3d worlds.
-In 2d sonic, spacial relations let you judge jumps, and sometimes damage was dealt because of spikes, which aren't as punishing as bottomless pits.

    3) Taking damage
-In 2d sonic, I found recovering rings after taking damage much more fun than recovering them in 3d. This is sorta subjective for me.

  • I do hope that isn't the final camera setup. Running *towards* the screen at 100 miles an hour such that you can't see anything in front of you is not my idea of fun. Maybe it's a good wank if you've played through the game 50 times and have memorised the levels so much that you could play it with the TV turned off, but for the rest of us who don't have time to play some of our games *once*, let alone enough times to memorise everything... fuck that shit.

Still, it's early days, and I don't see anything wrong with the rest (except for the fact it's a Sonic game an most Sonic games suck for whatever reason, so this one has a lot to prove).
