Epic's Unreal Engine 4 to Target Consoles First
by Aaron Linde, Mar 13, 2008 1:49pm PDTThe next version of Epic's popular Unreal Engine game development middleware will be initially skewed towards console development, according to company president Tim Sweeney.
"Version 4 will exclusively target the next console generation," Sweeney told TG Daily. "Microsoft's successor for the Xbox 360, Sony's successor for the Playstation 3--and if Nintendo ships a machine with similar hardware specs, then that also.
"PCs will follow after that," he continued.
Epic's initial focus on console development reflects the movements of many studios towards the more lucrative console gaming market, which has grown exponentially in recent years.
The company has not abandoned its PC gaming roots, however. Epic announced late last month that it intends to participate in the PC Gaming Alliance, a consortium bent on revitalizing the platform.

I wont miss Epic, I wont miss Unreal 4 and I wont miss their games. My God Unreal 3 was the perfect example of the difference between a more console like game with a lot of eye candy and crappy gameplay versus something like Team Fortress 2 which was obviously made with great gameplay in mind.

Seriously, I do happen to consider myself a fan of Epic, but at the same time, I'm still a bigger fan of shooters for the PC that I'd buy it over the console version. All they're doing is alienating the PC fanbase that got them out of obscurity. When the next PC cycle comes where PC dominates again, they should hope that we don't hold grudges. At the same time, PC gaming has a dedicated, solid fanbase that is much larger than is let and a good group of the industry that supports it so I'll just get my PC gaming fix from them who in some cases, are just at talented if not so much more so than Epic.

What kind of bullshit is that?

1) Epics PC tech is stronger than their console tech right now. As they are a major licensor, they need to meet licensee needs. And a large number of the licensees are focused on console games.
2) Epic has a branding problem. Unreal refers to both their game franchise and their tech. I assume this is more of a tech statement (though given sales numbers these days, I wouldn't be suprised if it was a position statement for both).
3) Epic probably does a substantial amount of internal development on PC. Thats unlikely to change. The work they do for the consoles will likely make the PC engine run better as well.
I know hating Epic is hip right now, but this isn't as big of a deal as people are making it out to be. Devs spending AAA budgets are going to focus on the platforms where they can get AAA sales. In general, thats going to mean the more the better.
Epics tool chain is still one of the best, if not the best, in the game industry. Don't underestimate or undervalue them - their still a massive powerhouse.

I recall back in the day walking past some guy playing Warcraft. I had whatever console was out at the time. I was like "THAT LOOKS AWESOME. I GOTTA PLAY THAT!" So even though I was poor as sin. I saved my money and bought a $1400 pc just to play one game.......Do you see what happened there? A unique looking fun game motivated me enough to buy hardware to play it. These old devs have grown weary and don't want to excel in creating fresh new worlds that motivate people to buy new pcs or upgrade their pc.
We need new upcoming devs to bring new ideas to old tired game play. The pc is the platform to push graphics and AI to the max if someone is willing to take advantage of it. Apparently The devs jumping to console aren't. Its sad and even though I thank them for the years of great gameplay. They disappoint the shit out of me now.

consoles are becoming more and more like PCs too, favoring one over the other makes no sense at all. if a PC dev wants to license UE4, what are they going to say? NO, SORRY! CONSOLE ONLY!
