Mass Effect DLC Announced: Bring Down the Sky

Developer BioWare today unveiled the first round of downloadable content for its hit Xbox 360 RPG Mass Effect.

Bring Down the Sky will introduce the alien race of the Batarians, an extremist group that has taken over an asteroid station in the Asgard system, sending it hurtling toward the colony world of Terra Nova. Players will be unsurprisingly tasked with averting the disaster, exploring a new world in the process.

BioWare estimates the scenario will last most gamers about 90 minutes, with 50 Gamerscore points hanging in the balance.

The content--the first in a series of such releases--is coming to Xbox Live on March 10, for the price of 400 Microsoft points ($5).

Cool, the batarians played a more significant role in the Mass effect book, it was almost totally weird and unexpected that they appeared nowhere in the game. Almost as if they wrote the book with the intent of having them in there and then ran out of time on the games production.

Anyway, this should be cool, the side quests were overall disappointing driving the mako (ugh) around pretty lame and barren landscapes, whereas the main quest planets were far more fleshed out and fun. I would assume this stuff will feel more like the latter.

I need to start up a second play of this game soon.

Lets work some math here... Mass Effect took me 30 hours to beat (and it was GREAT!) and cost me $60. Basically I slopped down $2 per hour of entertainment (and about 500 gamerpoints for the first playthrough). That feels about right for the experience.

Now they want me to put up $5 for 90 minutes, just for one extra mission (and the obvious lure of 50 gamerpoints points)? That works out to about $3.33 per hour of fun, an increase of 75% for content I felt was worth the $2-per-hour, but not worth more. I think I'm going to sit this one out.

My biggest worry here is that I can't purchase content from the US Live Marketplace since MS has started their regional lockout a while ago. The last thing I want is a localized version of this content. I guess I'll have to skip here, probably won't work with my UK copy of Mass Effect anyway ;-(
