Eidos Unveils First Tomb Raider: Underworld Screens
by Aaron Linde, Feb 01, 2008 11:16am PSTEidos has revealed a first look at the latest installment in Lara Croft's ongoing tomb-raidin' adventures with new screenshots of Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider: Underworld (PC, PS2, PS3, X360, Wii).
Tomb Raider: Underworld's plot is planned to directly follow the events of Tomb Raider: Legend, released in 2006. Underworld is said to feature a variety of new graphical touches and motion-captured animations.
Eidos parent company SCi announced earlier this month that four of its titles—including Tomb Raider: Underworld—would be shifted to a late 2008 release to boost the company's bottom line during the holiday rush.

thats so 90's... isn't it a pretty common "technology" that every game use anyway ?

If you look at the full-size huge resolution images (e.g. the first one) you can see they're composited. The backgrounds are really low-res, scaled up with nearest neighbour scaling by the look of it (not just low-res textures; all the huge background pixels are aligned to the monitor, not the surfaces, and things like the beam have jaggies along their geometry that cannot be from textures) but the models for Lara and the animals are much higher resolution and apparently pasted in.
I'm not really complaining or calling "bullshot" as I doubt there is any intentional deception here (nobody would release those high res images and expect this go go unnoticed), but this is more concept art than screenshots.

They look fantastic, btw. And with the inevitably rock-solid controls and tight story that Crystal Dymics assuredly has in place, this thing is going to own. What an incredible rebirth for a seemingly dead-as-a-dodo franchise.

these screenshots imply they've updated the graphics but have done little or nothing for gameplay. didn't we play this game 10 years ago? is eidos this bankrupt?

tr 1 was excellent, then everything up until legends was trash. legends, though flawed, was great.
