Ex-Midway Employee Sues Nintendo over Wii Remote (Updated; Lawsuit Not Yet Planned)
by Nick Breckon, Jan 14, 2008 12:01pm PSTUpdate: Engadget has received a comment from Goschy's wife, who claims he is not yet planning to sue Nintendo over the matter.
Original story: Patrick Goschy, former Midway staffer, invented the Wii Remote ten years ago.
At least that is what he intends to prove when he takes Nintendo to court soon. Unlike similar cases, Goschy says he has the patent proof to back up his claims, in addition to hard evidence--evidence that has already spread to the internet.
A brief YouTube video, exhibit A, shows a pantsless Goschy demonstrating the device with the help of Ready 2 Rumble Boxing on a Dreamcast. For your evidentiary enjoyment, this video is viewable after the link.

The Wiimote works on infra-red sensors in the Wiimote itself, which translate movement from the sensor bar's 2 IR points.
FFS 2 candles or any other IR source will do the same friggin job.
His idea works on accelerometers, which are completely different.
The only similarity is that user movement is translated into onscreen action. Hardly a new concept, as it's been around for over 30 years.

Anyway, good luck to him. Just because a huge corp can get a product to market sooner than you doesn't negate patents. Quite the opposite, in fact: it's one of the reasons why patents are important.
It's at the bottom of these stairs ( http://www.tdubel.com/pelit/epaviralliset/kuvat/quake2x.jpg ) and is highly obvious what game it is, to any id fan anyways. ;)
Now let's see if vaporware can actually pay itself back 10 years behind schedule!

Well if he does not have a case I wonder why a similar controllers are not built for the 360, ps3 and pc what are companies waiting for, cash in on the Wii teet.
I wonder if this controller was available on the three platforms I mentioned above what would happen to the Wii market? It would be an interesting experiment for sure as a side note.

Remember, Nintendo was the one who dodged the bullet on Immersion's patent by implementing their rumble technology a different way. I would think that their patent attorneys would be smart enough to find a sufficient workaround for whatever this guy is smoking.
There is no lawsuit.

Update: Patrick's wife Sheri contacted us to set the story straight and says that Patrick isn't suing Nintendo (yet). She also gave us the link to the news story, which provides some further info and a Nintendo statement which denies any Goschy involvement in the Wii's technology.

I remember playing an arcade boxing game where the gloves would translate into punches on screen so I guess those used accelerometers too.
I agree with the comment earlier, this guys idea failed and now he wants to cash in on it.
