What Zoid Is Gonna Do

N64.IGN has some news on what Zoid, whose contract with id ends today, is going to be working on at Retro Studios, namely network design and implementation. Check it:

Piecing the clues together, we contacted Zoid for comment about his future plans with Retro, which, it seems, are exactly as we'd expect. When asked if he would be working on a first-person shooter after beginning work at Retro in March, Zoid responded, "I will be focusing on network design and implementation. My game design experience is certainly specific with goal-orientated teamplay in first person shooters." This definitely suggests that Retro is in the works with a first-person shooter and it adds even more weight to the rumors that the company is preparing an online strategy. Mix in Retro's recently registered Internet domain names, www.retroworld.net and www.nintendoonline.com and we begin to grasp the bigger picture of Retro's -- and Nintendo's -- future plans.

  • Q3 isn\'t for everybody. People have a hard time picking it up because it moves faster than most games, and requires more creativity for the excellent gibs.

There is something I think a lot of people overlook. There is much more movement in the y-axis. Most HL maps are fairly flat, with few or no bounce pads. Q3 has people moving in all directions; and bounce pads and platforms place them below you and above you at all times. It takes a much better eye to keep track of players, and a faster reaction time to actaully hit player.

CS - Counter Strike is unique to the game community because it adds flava. Especially the C-4 missions. You might kill the whole team, but they still win because the C-4 went off.

CS brings together teams. It is much harder for one player to dominate the game. For the most part, the team must win as a whole. This makes it very challenging if your team ABSOLUTLY sucks. Probably just as challenging if not more challenging than Q3.

But that\'s just my opinion, I could be wrong...

  • Like I said in the last line, I think its harder to pick up the basics of CS.

All those things I listed about CS are what you need to learn in those first few weeks.

In Q3, theres a lot less basics to learn - point and shoot, what situations suit which weapon, etc.

But after say six months, you\'ll know everything about the basics, the weapons, etc for both games.

With CS, at that point theres no more individual skills to learn. At that point your team starts holding you back.

With Q3, you can keep learning and learning more as you go on.

  • The skills involved in being a rgeat Q3 player and CS player are different.

Saying CS is better for newbies is ridiculous. A CS newbie WILL be raped, until he gets practice in.

They to learn how to actually use the weapons, hell, it takes practice just to make your bullets go where the crosshair is.

They have to learn how to manage their money.

They have to learn how to be more stealthy and less rambo like.

Most importantly, you have to learn to deal with Quake style players who cry endlessly about campers.

They have to learn how to take down someone with a heavy advantage (for those time when your broke and pistol equiped team is getting slapped around by enemys with machine guns)

Now, you could make a similar list for Q3, but IMO, I think its easier to pick up the basics of Q3 than CS.

  • I found the learning curve in Counter Strike to be enormous compared to Q3. I played counter strike for 15minutes to a half hour, and I cant remember getting a frag. You have all this stuff to figure out, what stuff to buy, what you\'re supposed to do, working with teammates.. in Quake3 you just run around and kill people.

I climb to the top of the heap in Q3 FFAs with a modem, but in Counterstrike I was ineffective. I think a lot of that has to do with Halflife\'s ass modem code, but I\'m sure all the added complexity of CS has SOMETHING to do with it.

Is anybody denying that counterstrike is the more complex of the two games? Anybody here think counterstrike is simpler??

  • #73, Hah... What we need is a mod for the squatters and campers which leaves a steaming pile of poopoo behind if you stay too long. At least this would provide newbies with a clue.

As for how long it takes to aquire FPS \"skillz\" ... not long, but it does depend on your age. My gf\'s 14yr old cousin was at my place this summer (babysitting) and he improved 50 fold in one week @ Quake2 & q3test (still couldn\'t beat my ass unless I let him though).

Brought Q3 home with me during Xmas and my stepdad was like \"wow\" after watching the into cinematic. After I convinced him to switch from trackball to mouse he didn\'t improve one bit in two weeks, and he played quite a bit. Every move was slow and deliberate... and he didn\'t heed my repeated strategic advice by running for health/ammo, etc. By the time I left he was up to tier 4 (i think it was) with wimpbots. :)
