I haven't seen anything yet that makes me spooge over DX10.

Stuff like lighting and smoke is one of the immediate benefits because now hardware has been made to fully take advantage of it. The biggest changes I read is giving developers more control over GPU hardware and graphics code is more precise and efficient.
