Warhammer Online Q&A

16

New at WarCray this afternoon is this Warhammer Online Q&A. EA Mythic's Richard Duffek is asked about the use of NPCs during Instanced RvR, taking territories, character creation, instancing, and the game rating. New screenshots can be found here.

"We feel that we can definitely showcase the grim and gritty world that is Warhammer and maintain a Teen rating."

You don't have to be a genius though to realize they can do a fair approximation of the "grim gritty" Warhammer world and keep the Teen Rating. The game will be much more successful with the Teen rating.

Of course it will be more successful with a teen rating. lol@fair approximation

You do realize as well that the Warhammer tabletop game and roleplay game is also aimed at teens?

Yes, but it's a bit harder to depict the rather graphic violence the IP implies with pewter models than it is in a video game.

Still the point is a lot of the violence is in imagination and in implication it doesn't need to be shown 100% and they should be able to do the same for the MMO.

I understand why people would want a higher rating, but people that say it's not Warhammer because it hasn't got graphic violence and blood and guts everywhere are putting their own bias spin on it.

Why does this argument only apply one way? If we took the My Little Pony franchise and plugged in Satan and massive amounts of gore you'd hear people ask "why?" all over the internet.

Ask the same question in this instance and we're just labeled bias. I don't get it.

Because Warhammer is aimed/sold to teens in the first place, I'm accusing people of bias because I think people are putting their own spin on how they imagine and think of the Warhammer world.

Go into any Games Workshop store and you'll see the target audience for Warhammer. It wouldn't be fair if those people weren't allowed to play the MMO.

I used to collect Warhammer and I'm still a big fan of the IP, I would maybe even prefer if it was a higher rating than teen, but saying it should/must be a higher rating is inaccurate.

Woah, wait a minute. When did the ESRB rating become a commandment? The rating would restrict teens from playing the game as much as GTA's rating does(not very much). Parents are still making the final decision, it's their responsibility to weigh the rating.

That being said any parent who is allowing their child to play Warhammer especially the role playing game should already know what it's about. Despite what you say Warhammer has some very mature themes and is quite graphic in it's depiction of war and chaos.

They're sacrificing a unique signature to the whole franchise to make a quick buck. Plain and simple. There's nothing noble about what they're doing.

No matter how much the ESRB fails to keep games out of kid's hands, it has no bearing on how much extra money the marketing/execs see with a Teen rating vs a Mature rating. Teen = More money in their eyes.

Oh and the last 5 times I went into a Games Workshop store I saw men in their 30s sitting around painting figs. You telling me they can't handle a, true to source, mature MMO?

They're just the people that work there and hang out 24/7 :). Try going on a saturday afternoon, Warhammer has and always will be a teen IP that has mature themes (and adult fans).

I own the two Realms of Chaos hardback books, which are the most mature books Gamesworkshop have ever put out. But they're still teen books, they don't have details of explicit sex or anything like that (although their are some sexual tones). They have never put out anything that would be considered an R rating.
