Guild Wars Sequel, Expansion Plans
by Maarten Goldstein, Mar 21, 2007 8:50am PDTThis Guild Wars Guru forum thread (thanks Blues News) is filled with Guild Wars followup information, all gathered from the most recent issue of PC Gamer. ArenaNet is planning to ditch the Chapter format for the game, and is instead focusing on an expansion pack called Eye of the North, as well as a proper sequel. The Eye of the North expansion pack is set for a holiday 2007 release, and will cost less than the previous chapter additions. It features no new professions, but will include new armor sets, new skills, new heroes and new areas to explore. Its storyline will bridge the gap between the first game and Guild Wars 2. Guild Wars 2 meanwhile, will feature four new races, and "radical" changes to many game elements including PvP play and the NPC companion system. It also sounds like there will be less instancing, and the level cap will be either really high or non-existant. The game will also remain fee-less. A beta is expected to start in 2008. I'm so conflicted about you.
On the one hand, you are really beautiful, and pretty clever. But on the other hand, you are not what you said you would be.
It's definitely not an easily accessible game - at least Prophecies/Factions - because the more you play, the more time you must invest, especially if you want to fully experience the content. However, there is no fallback - no real reward to solo-ing. Once the campaign is done, there isn't much more to do.
So much time to be invested in the game. Hunting for loot and crap...that is not something I like. You promised you wouldn't be like that. YOU PROMISED. :( You promised there would be no grind, but then you force me to redo instance after instance to capture skills. Then you force me to collect faction.
And worst of all...you make me trade with those bloody plebian jackanapes for things I don't have!
The increased level cap does not sound all that good as I hate level grinding and I say just ditch levels entirely. The instancing is fine by me but like I said earlier I wish they would take advantage of it to do some more cinematic things. Like blowing up a bridge or other level altering events. The heroes could stand to have a little more personality and definately must have some better AI. As for new racesm who cares? The furries can go yiff-off in other games and dwarves/elves suck due to overuse.
The lack new classes must be due to balancing and art creation issues. All the armor sets they have to create most cost a furtune in time and labor. Trying to balnce ten plus classes also is a pain. More is not always better.

PvE players want high levelcaps, large open worlds and loads of different items.
PvP players want fixed levelcaps and all skills unlocked so that the fights can be as balanced as possible.

Not so sure about the non-existant (or really high) level cap for GW2. I thought the lack of grind was the primary motive for GW's success.
