Which is released first?
Half Life 3 (the full non-episodic sequel to HL2) or DNF?

you know someone is going to make a clone of it and release it before EP2 finally crawls out into the light of day

I'd love to see a screenshot or two from id but I like how they keep their heads down and their mouths shut. Shows dicipline. Valve really just needs to STFU forever about their release dates. It would be more fair to rabid fans if they didn't release gameplay trailers and tons of screenshots every 3 weeks and then turn around kick us in the berries with these delays. I was really looking forward to a summer full of TF2 lans.

TLDR, make this the final "episode" and give us what we all want - HL3. The Hl2 engine is also looking tired, and no amount of "particle additions due to dual core support" will fix your muddy textures >:(

The delays are a bit silly (they should increase their estimates), but come on.
And for the people who just want HL3 instead, Valve themselves estimated it would take 10 years. Also, HL2 took 6 years. 1.5 years isn't much compared to that.

The word "targeted" makes the announcement just about completely worthless.
Nothing I have seen from Portal tells me that it is more than a $3.99 value-bin puzzle game.
That leaves Episode 2... which I still think will be worth the wait, but only if Valve doesn't try to pull off a ridiculous bundle price for the black box.

The Sam&Max team did it right. Make your content up front, and then time release it. Not this, we'll keep delaying as if we were making a 25 hour title. After this little 'episodic vacation' I hope they get their shit together and make a real game that is worth the 3 years of waiting.

Also, here's another strike for episodic content. Until you release content on a set schedule, you cannot call it episodic. This is now an EXPANSION pack, and has been for a long time. It's very difficult to create content for modern games on a schedule that is required for a truly episodic release. I just wish Valve would admit they stumbled, call this an expansion pack and move on.

After saying that, I would have to say that Half-Life 2 Episode 2 is probably about done and that it's Team Fortress 2 thats holding everything up. Seems to require more balancing of the classes etc. Valve would not delay there bread an butter for some console ports. If the PC version was done, they would release it and just release the console version a few months later. Half-Life 2 on the X-Box sold extremely poor if you remember and that valve was seriously disappointed in it.

No one's going to be able to say that they're not getting their money's worth whether they get Black for the PC or Orange for the 360, and no one is going to cry about the quality of what we get when it does hit.
I do think that sticking with the 'Episodic Content' moniker at this point is a little ridiculous though. At least, episodic content as it was originally pitched..
My biggest concert with these delays is that when they finally get around to their next full fledged project, be it HL3 or something else, that all this time spent working on extending the HL2 story and improving the source engine will put them behind the curve... unless they already have yet another team working on Source's successor.

Why dont they do something for the community due to this delay...like give us Portals now. I could care less about the HL2 single coming with it. I just want Portals and TF

If you are going to release a game every 2-3 years + delays it's not episodic guys. It's just the same only Valve story with a marketing team in place.

DNF is doing that.. but DNF is unique
And it's not as though it's costing me money waiting.
