3

There's a Q&A with CCP's Nathan Richardsson on GameSpot, asking the senior producer about the company, EVE Online and the recently released Revelations expansion.

I thought this was a very refreshing interview. It's so different to hear a producer say "we don't want 8 million people, because that wouldn't work with our game". They are profitable, so they mostly want to make their game better for the people who play it.

Not a process that would work for everyone, but cool that it works for them.

Yea that'd be fine if he didn't go on to say that 300,000 is the supposed population cap the system could handle.

Sure...in theory maybe, and only IF you can get people to spread out all nice and even accross the universe. Fat chance of that EVER happening.

Reality is they are throwing cash into the servers left, right and center just to keep up with the meager 30,000 people they have now and while it's become a little better, the big fleet fights(which arent going away, ever) can still crash the nodes and in general are huge lagfests.

Basically, these guys talk shit just like everyone else, but they do have a unique game that is doing well atm.

what vacous said - Richardsson doesn't want 8 million people because his game can barely handle 35k online all at once. Not saying EVE needs more players, just that they realistically cannot expect to handly a lot more despite of the very numerous hardware upgrades and infrastructure optimizations (it's bad enough with them celebrating every new record - 32k! 33k!! 34k!!! - while most players lag like hell and can barely log in at these times)
