Carmack, id Honored with Emmys
by Chris Remo, Jan 10, 2007 7:04am PSTid Software became what it claims is the first independent game developer to win an Emmy, when the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences honored it this week with an award for the technological advances it made in rendering with its QUAKE engine, used in various forms in countless games. Company co-founder and technical director John Carmack was also presented with an award, also recognizing breakthrough advances in rendering technology. Carmack's award was given for his role as lead programmer on the seminal DOOM. The Emmys given to id and Carmack fell into the Technology and Engineering category for Science, Engineering and Technology for Broadband and Personal Television, which includes video game technology. They were presented at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. "This is an incredible honor for John Carmack and id Software," said company CEO Todd Hollenshead, speaking on behalf of id. "We consistently push the limits of gaming technology, and it's great to be recognized for the passion and dedication we put into our games."

Doom was just a huge and unexpected leap. id went from Wolf3D (neat considering it ran on a 386sx/16), to Doom while everyone else was licensing Wolf3D's engine with games like Blakestone 3D. All in a very short period of time. Doom was just huge. Even though it wasn't true 3D, I still think its impact was probably larger than Quake. Doom was the killer app for getting that 486DX2/50 or DX2/66 processor. It defined the genre.
It's funny to look back and see how much it got right. No prior art here at all folks.

When they unveiled DOOM 3 they mentioned at QuakeCon 2004 that their next internally-developed game wouldn't take as long as DOOM 3's 4.5 year timeline (I'm thinking they said like 2 years). Here it is 2007 and we know nothing about the game at all (other than it won't be an existing IP). I wonder what's happening and/or what went wrong.

"There were some clear wins going from Windows 95 to Windows XP for games, but there really aren’t any for Vista. They’re artificially doing that by tying DX10 so close it, which is really nothing about the OS. It’s a hardware-interface spec. It’s an artificial thing that they’re doing there. They’re really grasping at straws for reasons to upgrade the operating system. I suspect I could run XP for a great many more years without having a problem with it."
